  • An ad hoc group of citizens calling itself the Hillsboro Linear Trail Committee presented a written proposal to the city council to develop a three-block area of abandoned railroad tracks within the city into a “linear park.” The proposal asked the city to designate $5,000 in the 2003 budget for the first phase of the park from Lincoln Street across Main Street to Ash Street. The committee stated its interest in “developing more green spaces and recreational walking paths.” As a first step, the council instructed City Administrator Steve Garrett to survey business owners and residents who own property adjacent to the railroad corridor.

  • Developing a more effective relationship with city boards headed the list of five strategies identified by the Hillsboro City Council at a planning meeting for the 2002-03 year. The other five strategies were: to modernize and streamline city functions, operate the city in a customer-friendly manner, improve the function and appearance of the community, and make the city council an effective body for proper direction of the city now and in the future.

  • KaLyn Nethercot, Douglass, was appointed director of the Tabor College Wichita Center for Adult Studies campus. She had been working most recently as executive director of enrollment management at Friends University.

  • The USD 410 Board of Education approved increases in textbook fees and meals for the upcoming school year. The textbook fees were increased by $5 per student, which was expected to increase revenue by $3,025. The increase in meal prices for lunches ranged from from 10 cents for kindergarten to Grade 3 (to $1.90) to 40 cents for visitors (to $3.50).

  • The nine-game winning streak by the Hillsboro American Legion Post 366 baseball team ended with a 6-5 loss to Andover. The loss gave the team a 14-2 record for the summer.

  • Four Hillsboroans were among the 2,000-plus people to volunteer to help at the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s U.S. Open Golf Tournament at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson. They were Jane Long, Melissa Bartel, Raye Dirks and Max Terman.

  • Legacy Park is the new name for Peabody Community Living Center, which is now under the ownership of Mid-America Health Centers Inc. of Wichita.
