Jim Richardson’s images of the Flint Hills featured in National Geographic magazine will be on display in Marion County at the Historic Marion City Library.

The April 2007 issue of National Geographic shared the hidden secrets of the Flint Hills with its readers, heralding the Flint Hills as among the world’s most breathtaking natural treasures.

Richardson worked on the story for almost a year, documenting the subtleties of the landscape from the air, at night, during thunderstorms, within millimeters of tiny prairie flowers and more.

Richardson, of Lindsborg, has been a photographer for National Geographic since 1984, producing more than 20 stories to date. His areas of expertise include volcanoes, agriculture, rivers and aquifers and the United Kingdom, particularly the people, culture and landscapes of Scotland.

In May 2004, National Geographic published a color collection of his photographs of the Great Plains, alongside a retrospective of his 30 years of social documentary photography of Cuba, Kan.

The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. it works to inspire people to care about the planet, reflecting the world through its five magazines, television programs, films, radio broadcasts, books, videos, maps, interactive media and merchandise. The Society has funded more than 8,000 scientific research projects.

As a homage to the article and the Flint Hills, the Travel & Tourism Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce has made the traveling exhibit of photographs available for a year-long journey throughout the Flint Hills, bringing more than 30 prints of Richardson’s work to Kansas communities.

Marion City Library, located in a restored Santa Fe Depot, is just south of downtown on 101 Library St.

The exhibit will be on display from June 25 through July 1. The hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. A reception to celebrate the exhibit is planned for 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with refreshments and live music.

For more information on the exhibit, contact the Marion City Library at 620-382-2442, Mid-Kansas Community Action Program at 620-382-8807 or the City of Marion at 620-382-3703.
