The Goessel High boys track team won its regional Friday for the third straight year.

The Bluebird girls set two school records and will send four competitors and one relay squad to the Class 1A state meet in Wichita.

During the regional held at Madison, Tricia Fensky qualified for state and set a school record by clearing 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.

Fensky joins Kylee Nikkel (shot put), Aspen Frey (1,600) and Kristen Hoffman (3,200) on Goessel’s list of individual qualifiers.

They will be joined by the 4x800 relay team of Susi Schraml, Lindsey Wedel, Sara Boman and Kristen Hoffman, who set a school record at Madison with a time of 10:49.

“We challenged the 4x800 relay this week to work toward the school record,” coach Vanessa Schroeder said. “This is a very young team of freshmen. They have a bright future ahead of them.”

For the boys, Craig Banman set a school record by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault.

In addition to the pole vault, Banman has qualified in the 300-meter hurdles and both the 4x100 and 4x400.

Brett Goerzen and Garrett Hiebert have also qualified for state competition in four events. Goerzen will compete in the pole vault, long jump, 100 and 4x100 relay. Hiebert has qualified in the triple jump, javelin, 400 and 4x400 relay.

Sheldon Goerzen has qualified in the 300 hurdles and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Martin Koppitz will go to state in the triple jump, 1,600, and as an alternate in the 4x400.

Anthony Hiebert will also make the trip to Wichita as an alternate on the 4x400 squad. Weston Hiebert will run the 4x400. Cameron Stultz and Travis Fensky round out the 4x100 team.

“We are taking a tremendous boys’ team to state this year,” coach Sandy Banman said. “They have lofty goals as individuals and as a team.”
