The Goessel High boys team totaled 95 points and finished second to Berean at the Heart of America league track meet Friday.
“Our boys battled to the end,” coach Sandy Banman said. “The 4x400 was a highlight for us.”
In that race, Goessel’s foursome broke the meet record, but finished second to Berean.
The Bluebirds benefitted from nine other top-three performances.
Garrett Hiebert won the triple jump (42 feet, 9 inches) and javelin (192-10), and placed third in the 400 meters (53.09 seconds).
Sheldon Goerzen (41.33) and Wade Hiebert (43.00) finished second and third, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles.
Brett Goerzen finished second in the long jump (20-6) and second in the pole vault (12-0).
Craig Banman won the pole vault (12-6) and teamed with Goerzen, Goerzen and Cameron Stultz to win the 4x100.
Martin Koppitz placed third in the triple jump (41-5).
The Goessel girls finished seventh. Kylee Nikkel was second in the shot put (34-5). Kristen Hoffman took second in the 3,200 (12:47). Tricia Fensky tied for third in the pole vault (7-6).
Brittany Dirksen broke her personal-best throw in the javelin by 11 feet.
“She has been working really hard at practice and it was good to see her get the results,” Banman said.
Peabody-Burns—Led by Andrew Topham, who took first in both the 1,600 and 3,200, the Peabody-Burns boys scored 59 points and finished fifth.
Topham’s times were 4:36 and 9:48, respectively.
The Warriors also benefitted from a second-place finish by Will Pratt in the high jump (5-10). Pratt finished fourth in the shot put (43-2). Duane Unruh took fifth in the 800 (2:07) and long jump (19-11).
The PBHS 4x800 relay team took second (8:49) and the 4x100 relay team finished third (46 seconds).
For the girls, freshman Danielle Savage turned in the top performance, a fifth-place finish in the 400 (1:05).
