A $100 grant awarded to the Sunflower Reading Council provided money for Marion County teachers to purchase children’s books for beauty salons in Marion, Hillsboro and Newton.

Young customers will now have some reading material on their level while waiting for appointments or parents.

The grant was provided by the Kansas Reading Association, a nonprofit affiliate of the International Reading Association. It consists of nearly 1,000 reading professionals and interested individuals in 20 councils throughout the state.

Sunflower Council is an affiliate of KRA, with 24 members from five school districts in Marion and Harvey counties. KRA’s mission is to promote learning through quality literacy experiences for all.

While KRA members are primarily educators, membership is open to all who are involved, concerned or interested in reading and its impact.

KRA makes mini-grants available every year. The Sunflower Council has applied for and received grants each year since 2003, including providing preschool-level books for Marion County Parents as Teachers and placing children’s books at area Pizza Huts and laundromats.
