Hillsboro boys avenge earlier loss to Marion in sub-state play PDF Print E-mail

Led by Lucas Hamm's 27 points, the Trojans played hard to the end to capture a 49-35 victory Spurred by the memory of their frustrating loss to Marion one month earlier, the Hillsboro Trojans changed a previous unhappy ending into a well-earned victory over Marion, 49-35, in a jam-packed gymnasium in Marion.

The story-line on this day followed last month's heartbreaking loss as the Trojans grabbed the lead early and led by double digits by halftime. Last month the lead was 12 points, this time the Trojans led by 14, 30-16. Lucas Hamm scored 17 points in the opening two quarters to fuel the Trojans.

As before, Marion made a run at Hillsboro in the third quarter. This time, instead of catching up, the Warriors only got as close as six points, 32-26 when Calvin Jeffrey scored in the paint with 1:34 left in the quarter.

But this time Hillsboro stopped the bleeding and held the Warriors off at 37-30 by the end of the quarter.

Then Hamm stepped up once more, scoring eight straight points to start the fourth quarter and essentially determine the outcome. When Daniel Jost followed Hamm's burst with a basket of his own, Hillsboro led 47-30 with 5:22 to play. The Trojans held off the Warriors the rest of the way to secure the 14-point win.

The victory advances Hillsboro into the semifinals game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Halstead against the winner of No. 1 seeded Southeast of Saline and Lyons.
