Jessica Vogel, a junior, was selected for the all-state orchestra. She is a three-time member of the South Central Kansas Music Educators Association District honor band and was a member of the all-district orchestra as a junior.

"Membership in an all-state instrumental ensemble is the most difficult all-state honor to accomplish," said Mike Connell, MHS director of instrumental music. "It is by two live auditions performing difficult music that high school musicians attain the all-state designation.

"Only 14 flute players are selected to be all-state-10 in the all-state band and four in the all-state orchestra," he added. "Though I don't have the exact numbers, I do know that more than 75 flute students auditioned in our district alone, and that there are six KMEA districts in our state."

Vogel also was a member of an all-regional honor band hosted by the University of Nebraska. Students, selected by audition CD recordings, came from Nebraska and eight surrounding states. She was first chair in the band and played in the flute quartet which performed in January.

As a freshman and sophomore, Vogel received a "I" rating on her solo at the state music festival in spring.

Bryce Nelson, a senior trombone player selected for the all-state orchestra, went through the audition process for the KMEA district and state honor groups for the first time this year.

Only 18 trombone players are selected to be all-state-nine in the band, four in the orchestra, and five in the jazz ensemble, according to Connell.

Nelson is a four-year member of the MHS Concert Band and a three-year member of the MHS Jazz Ensemble.

Jordan Timm, a senior, sings bass and is a three-year member of the all-state choir. He twice has received a "I" rating at the state music festival and is a three-year member of the select MHS Singers at Marion High School, directed by Kevin Moler.
