MHS boys come from behind to beat Lyons, 61-45 PDF Print E-mail

The Marion boys blasted Lyons on Friday with a 31-5 third quarter and went on to post a 61-45 home-court victory after trailing 24-12 at halftime.

"Obviously the first half and the second half were two different stories," coach Rex Ostmeyer said. "We were very flat in the first half, shot the ball poorly, and I thought Lyons played very well, especially in the first quarter."

The only member of the Lions who had any measure of success was Brennan Clark, who powered the visitors to their halftime lead with nine points.

Travis Hett opened the frenetic third frame with a steal-and-score layup, and Marion never trailed after he buried a 3-pointer with 3:39 to go.

"We didn't really make a bunch of adjustments at halftime," Ostmeyer said. "We just talked about how we had to take our defensive intensity up a level, and we did that in the third quarter."

Emmanuel Jackson gave the Warriors the lead they did not lose with a 3-point play at 2:49.

Jason Hett grabbed a defensive rebound and fed it ahead to Calvin Jeffrey, who swung it to Jackson.

Jackson drilled the 2-pointer and buried the free throw to give Marion a 30-27 lead. The Warriors put together a 13-2 run that chewed up the rest of the quarter.

Calvin Jeffrey scored a fantastic tip-in basket at 2:34. The shot made it 32-27, and the crowd erupted as Lyons called time out.

Jason Hett keyed another transition basket with a steal at 1:44. Travis Hett finished that play with a 2-pointer assisted by Jackson.

Jason Hett sat down for the final 1:18 of the period, but MHS scored nine more points.

After another Travis Hett 2-pointer, Jeffrey scored a layup while crashing into Dane Kepka, who was whistled for a foul. Kepka protested and was whistled for a technical, followed immediately by a technical on the Lyons bench.

When Jeffrey finished at the line, Marion was ahead by 12.

On the next possession, Jeffrey drew another foul and made two more free throws for a 43-29 Warrior lead.

Lyons closed the gap to seven twice in the final quarter, but never made it a two-possession game.

"We definitely need to get to the point where we are playing four quarters of basketball rather than just one or two, as we have the past few games," Ostmeyer said."That will be vital down the stretch.

"We also need to do a much better job of rebounding the ball," he added. "Our rebounding was atrocious in this game, and we better get that fixed real quick."

Lyons led by as many as 14 points in the first half, and the Warriors' biggest lead was 17 in the second half.

Clark led Lyons with 17 points.

Travis Hett finished with 16 while Jackson added 14, Jeffrey 13 and Jason Hett 11.

Coming-MHS was schedule to play at Haven on Tuesday and will travel to Halstead on Friday.
