Hillsboro wrestlers finished sixth at a competitive Eureka Invitational tournament that got even tougher because of the weather.
With heavy snowfall prompting the cancellation of some other tournaments, the field at Eureka grew to 18 teams, including some solid programs from Class 4A and one school from Oklahoma.
Even so, the Trojans scored 105 points to place sixth behind Pratt (198.5), state-ranked Rose Hill (189), state-ranked Eureka (152), state-ranked Garden Plain (122.5) and Burlington (114.5).
"The guys competed hard and some of them looked very sharp in some matches," coach Scott O'Hare said.
Leading the way for Hillsboro with second-place finishes were Nicholas Mueller (2-1 at 130 pounds), Tyler Jones (3-1 at 140) and Jacob Yoder (2-1 at 171).
"I was extremely proud of Nicholas for making his third straight championship match appearance this season," O'Hare said. "Although he lost in the finals to the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Class 3A, he won an exciting overtime match in the semifinals to advance there.
"Tyler Jones won a very tough semifinals match against a kid from Owasso, Okla., to earn his first appearance in a tournament final in his young high school career. He lost in the finals to Darrell Miller of Herington, the No. 4 ranked wrestler in Class 3A.
"Jacob Yoder wrestled well throughout the day to earn his way back into the tournament championship match. He wrestled with a lot of intensity and aggressiveness."
Also placing in the top five in their respective weight classes were: Grady Stultz (4-1), third at 152; Toby Jones (3-2), fifth at 135; and Sean Leihy (3-2), fifth at 145.
Also competing for HHS were Alex Jost (0-2 at 103), Robby McClelland (0-2 at 112), Jared King (0-2) at 125, Frankie Martin (1-2 at 152), John Hein (1-2 at 189) and Tyler Lofton (0-2 at 215).
The Trojans also received the tournament sportsmanship award, as voted on by the coaches of the participating schools and the officials.
"I am very proud of this award, as we try to get these guys to understand the importance of character and sportsmanship that goes along with athletic participation," O'Hare said.
Lyons double dual-Hillsboro swept both of its matches at a double dual Thursday at Lyons.
The Trojans shut out the home team, 63-0, in the opening match. Winning on the mat were Alex Jost by fall at 103 pounds, Robbie McClelland by decision at 112, Jared King by fall at 125, Toby Jones by fall at 135, Tyler Jones by fall at 140, Sean Leihy by decision at 145, Frankie Martin by fall at 160 and John Hein by decision at 189.
Nicholas Mueller, Grady Stultz, Jacob Yoder and Tyler Lofton picked up wins by forfeit.
Even with the shutout, O'Hare said his team didn't compete as aggressively as he'd like.
"Even though we won every match, I didn't feel like we wrestled with a lot of intensity, especially in the opening periods of the matches. Throughout each, we seemed to loosen up and wrestle with a little more aggressiveness."
In its other match of the evening, Hillsboro defeated Lincoln, 42-27. Only three matches were determined on the mat: Jost lost by fall, Mueller lost by decision and Grady Stultz lost by fall.
Mueller's loss was his first of the season and came against Tommy Knapp, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A at 130 pounds.
"In the end, after wrestling for a total of 8:25, Nicholas gave up a reversal and lost 4-2 in triple overtime," O'Hare said.
