HHS girls win, boys lose to Smoky Valley on Friday

Hillsboro girls will play for the championship of the Cardinal Classic at 6 p.m. Saturday in Cheney while the boys will play for fifth place.
For the second time in two outings, the Hillsboro girls and boys were on the opposite ends of success Friday night in the second round of pool play in Cheney's Cardinal Classic played in Hillsboro.
The Hillsboro girls used a strong second half to run away from the Vikings by a score of 55-38. In a see-saw first half, the Trojans streaked to a 15-5 lead after one quarter, but found themselves trailing 21-20 at halftime. But JuliAnne Chisholm scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter to ignite HHS to a 44-30 lead after three quarters. For the game, Tina Frick add 11 points for HHS, who improves to 2-0 and will play for the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday in Cheney against the winner of Friday night's game between Clearwater and Winfield.
The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, need good defense and good outside shooting night to overcome Smoky Valley's trademark zone defense. The Trojans had all the defense they needed but could not convert on the offense end in a 40-32 loss to the Vikings.
After Smoky made six of its first seven shots of the game to take an early 13-6 lead, Hillsboro used its defense to battle back into a tie at 28-28 with 3:44 left in the third quarter.
The Vikings crept back to a 33-28 lead by the end of the quarter. Even though Hillsboro shot only 1-for-10 from the floor in the final quarter, the Trojans remained within striking distance until the final minute or so.
Lucas Hamm led HHS with 13 points. For the game, HHS shot 27 percent from the field.
With the loss, Hillsboro is off to an 0-2 start and will play Chaparral at 12:45 p.m. Saturday in Cheney for fifth place in the Cardinal Classic.
