The Hillsboro High wrestling team opened its 2006-7 season by taking two of three dual matches Thursday at Marion.

In the opener, the Trojans outlasted the hosts, 42-18, in a match that included two overtime decisions.

Winning on the mat for Hillsboro were Alex Jost at 112 pounds, Jared King in overtime at 125, Nicholas Mueller at 130, Toby Jones at 135, Tyler Jones in overtime at 140, Sean Leihy at 145, Frankie Martin at 152, Jacob Yoder at 171, John Hein at 189 and Tyler Martin at 215.

Winning on the mat for Marion were Cody Wilden at 119 and John Barr at 152.

The Trojans defeated Smoky Valley 51-24 with mat wins by Jost, Robby McClelland at 119, King, Mueller, Toby Jones, Tyler Jones, Leihy and Martin.

Hillsboro lost the final dual of the evening to Hoisington, 42-27. McClelland, Mueller, Toby Jones, Tyler Jones and Leihy won on the mat.

"I was pleased with our performance overall," coach Scott O'Hare said. "We made a lot of technical mistakes, as I expected, but made up for many of them by wrestling with intensity and aggressiveness.

"I knew going into Thursday night that we would not be prepared technique-wise," he added. "We simply didn't have enough time to cover a lot of things, but we talked a lot about wrestling aggressively and just getting after it. I felt like we did that.

"This is a pretty young, but talented, group of wrestlers, and they have a lot of desire to do well," O'Hare said. "As they continue to mature, and as their technique improves, these guys will be turning some heads in the area.

"Thursday was a pretty nice start with two MCAA dual wins."

Coming-The Trojans will travel to Hesston Saturday to compete in their first tournament of the season. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
