The Tabor College men's basketball team won its second non-conference game of the year Saturday in a hotly contested game against Bacone College-but may have lost key players to injury.
A day earlier, the Bluejays dropped a 78-56 decision to NCAA Division II opponent Eastern New Mexico University.
Andy Brubacher had 22 points, two assists, two steals, and led the team in all three categories. One of Brubacher's assists came on the first bucket of the game.
"Andy started us off strong from the beginning, really started hitting some shots," assistant coach Micah Ratzlaff said. "That's big for us because a lot of our guys really play off of him."
Greg Munroe came up with a steal, and Brubacher fed the ball to Mike Stoeker for a layup and a 2-point lead.
Though overmatched, Tabor hung tough until a 15-1 run pushed the game to an apparent breaking point half way though the first period.
ENMU had pushed to a 14-point lead when Tyler Weinbrenner nailed a three-pointer that ignited a 15-2 run.
Brubacher capped Tabor's counterpunch with a 3-pointer of his own that cut the lead to a single point.
But from the 6:52 mark in the first half until the final buzzer, the game court tilted toward the opposition.
ENMU built an 11-point lead going into halftime, and Tabor came no closer than that the rest of the way.
"We played really well that game," Ratzlaff said. "It was a really good team we were playing."
Greg Munroe, a transfer from NCAA Division II, had 15 points, five rebounds, an assist, a steal and blocked two shots.
"Greg can play at that level-he was dominant through spurts during the game," Ratzlaff said. "He can definitely get it done, but we need to get him going throughout the whole game."
Saturday's game against Bacone saw the Bluejays ran into a different style of play.
"They're a good team-they beat John Brown-but you never know what you're going to get from them," Ratzlaff said. "We just focused on what we had to do to get a win."
Brubacher got in on the first bucket again with an assist on a Weinbrenner three, and Tabor rolled to a six-point advantage midway through the first half.
But when Bluejay center Mike Stoeker left the game with a head injury, Bacone rallied to take the lead.
Coming out of a timeout, Brubacher converted a three-point play to put Tabor back on top.
The game stayed close for the rest of the first half and the first three minutes of the second.
Then Munroe dunked off an assist from Weinbrenner, and 30 seconds later, Brubacher caught a pass from Weinbrenner and hit a jumper to give the Jays the lead for good.
Later in the half, Brubacher went down with a dislocated shoulder.
"We were without Mike for almost the whole game, and we were without Andy for the last 10 minutes," Ratzlaff said. "It was a very physical game."
Brubacher's immediate status is still uncertain.
"There's a possibility that Eric Weinbrenner, Casey Hillman and some of our freshmen will see time," Ratzlaff said. "Without Andy out there, it brings more guys into the picture-they'll have to earn it in practice this week."
When Stoeker went out in the early going, the Bluejays needed someone to step up, and Toby Berg answered the bell.
"(Berg) stepped up big time," Ratzlaff said. "I don't know if we would have won without him."
Berg had five points, eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks in 15 minutes.
"We threw him in there, and he came up huge for us," Ratzlaff said. "We don't expect that from him every night. He's going to get some more chances."
Coming-Tabor (2-5) begins conference play on Thursday night in Newton with an 8 p.m. matchup against Bethel College.
The Bluejays will play their home opener against McPherson with a 7 p.m. contest in Hillsboro.
