Centre students to honor veterans

A Veterans Day program will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Centre Elementary School.

Kindergartners through sixth-graders will present a program and the high-school choir will sing.

Veterans and their guests are invited for refreshments in the cafeteria after the program.

The public is invited to attend.

Pilgrimage to Pilsen planned for Nov. 11

The fourth annual Archdiocese of Military Services military pilgrimage to Pilsen, sponsored this year by the St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Community of McConnell Air Force Base, will be held Nov. 11 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen.

Mass will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying ceremony with Honor Guard at the statue of Chaplain Emil Kapaun.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Parish, with proceeds going to the Father Kapaun Guild.

Until his death in 1951, Kapaun cared for prisoners of war in a Communist prison camp in North Korea. He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service cross posthumously and was named a "servant of God" by the Roman Catholic Church. The Archdiocese for the Military Services and the Diocese of Wichita are promoting his canonization.

Eastmoor plans fall missions conference

Lynn and Kay DeMoss will be the missionary speakers at the Fall Missions Conference Nov. 11 and 12 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.

Since 1993, the United Methodist ministers have been teaching in Africa and leading mission study tours to Russia, the Baltics, South Africa, Chile and Lithuania. They also work in the UMC West Michigan Conference as secretaries of global ministries and chair of Conference Mission Personnel.

The couple will be available for discussion at a 10 a.m. coffee time Saturday. They will present "Missions in the 21st Century" at 7 p.m. Saturday.

They will also speak Sunday at the morning worship service.

The public is invited to attend.

DU volunteer to host product demo

Ducks Unlimited volunteer Robin Allen of Hillsboro will host a demonstration of Hunt and Home kitchen products from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

Ducks Unlimited is the world's largest private conservation organization for water fowl and wetlands. Its new Hunt and Home program offers sauces, spices, breads and kitchen utensils, the proceeds of which go directly toward wetland conservation.

Ebenfeld plans missions festival

Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church of rural Hillsboro will celebrate its annual Harvest Missions Festival Sunday, Nov. 12.

Adult Sunday school classes will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall to hear Tabor College students share about their summer mission trips.

Worship services will begin at 10:30 a.m., with a contemporary service in the Branch and a traditional service in the sanctuary.

The adult choir will sing in the sanctuary and Samir Yossef of the Arabic Mennonite Brethren Church in Vancouver, British Columbia, will give the missions message.

A festival meal will be served at noon in the fellowship hall.

The public is invited to attend.

Burns church plans Veterans Sunday

Burns United Methodist Church will observe Veterans Sunday at its 9 a.m. worship service Nov. 12.

Area veterans are invited to attend the service featuring special music, recognition of veterans and preaching by pastor Jim Bush. Refreshments will follow.

The church will collect items and letters of encouragement on Sunday to send in holiday care packages to veterans serving overseas. A booklet is also being prepared with military information of local veterans in appreciation of their service.

Chat and Diners conclude 40th year

Marion County Lake residents' final Chat and Dine meeting of the season was held Nov. 5 at the Lake Hall.

Three families who have lived at the lake for all 40 years of the Chat and Dine organization were honored at the soup supper celebrating the 40th anniversary.

Blanche and Charlie Cowan, Tootsie and Dale Snelling and John Waner shared memories from their years as residents.

Wilma Gilmer provided a table display of lake directories, one of the members' two cookbooks and a summary of four decades of activity.

Recognized as first-time attenders were Marjorie and Lee Nelson. Honored for November and December birthdays and anniversaries were Sally Attwater, Dale Snelling, Gloria Moody, Jenny Alderson, Judy Priest, Homer McKellips, Neysa Eberhard and Marilyn and Larry Hamler.

Elected as new members for the 2007 Chat and Dine Coordinating Committee were Carolyn and Paul White and Alberta Pritz. Continuing on the committee are Nadine Iseli, Carol and Don Kirchmer and Jean McKellips.

Winning the Blackout round of Friendship Bingo was Bob Risenhoover. Winners of the drawings were Peggi Wilson, Earl Hancock, Marilyn Hamler, Brigette Pennington, Bob Risenhoover and Cara Stockdale.

Cooking and donating the soups were Sue and Willis Peterson, Wilma Gilmer, Nadine Iseli and Neysa Eberhard. Hosts and helpers for the evening were Jean Maples, Don Thomas, Sallie and Paul Attwater, Tina and Earl Hancock and Cody Hancock.

The next meeting of Chat and Dine will be Saturday, April 7.

Read to 'somebunny' during book week

In recognition of the second annual Kansas Reads...To Preschoolers project planned for National Children's Book Week Nov. 13 through 19, Delora Kaufman of the Hillsboro Public Library will read the selected book "Bunny Cakes" by Rosemary Wells to area preschoolers.

Readings are planned for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 28 and 1 p.m. Nov. 30, both at Hillsboro Elementary School.

The project is an effort to encourage Kansans to read to "somebunny" age 5 and under.

The Farmerettes will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, in the home of Nellie Jost at 512 W. Grand in Hillsboro.

Roll call is a major event for me or in the world in 2006. Nancy Pihl will give the lesson.

Marion library sets movie showing

The Marion City Library will show a newly released animated film about a rookie racecar at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16.

The movie is rated G and is 116 minutes long. Children under 7 must be accompanied by a parent. Bring pillows to sit on the floor.

Booths available at Nov. 25 craft fair

Table space is still available at the arts and crafts fair planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov 25 at the Cottonwood Falls Community Building in Swope Park.

The event is held in conjunction with the Chase County Christmas celebration and courthouse lighting ceremony.
