TC runners end season at Region IV PDF Print E-mail

At the Region IV cross-country championship hosted by Southwestern College, the Tabor College women's team finished fourth out of 15 teams.

Sarah Fogle, who placed 10th in a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds, ran well, but her finish was bittersweetness.

"Sarah ran her fastest time of the season," coach Karol Hunt said. "Even though she ran well, it was a disappointing day for her because she missed qualifying for nationals by one place."

Fogle and Heidi Schmidt (12th, 19:45) earned All-Region honors by placing in the top 15.

"Heidi ran her fastest race of the season," Hunt said. "She was finally hitting full stride after an early season injury. Unfortunately, the season had to end."

Amber Wiens and Shelby Miller both finished in 20:07, placing 16th and 17th, respectively.

"Amber and Shelby ran really competitively to end the season," Hunt said. "Amber set a new personal record, and Shelby tied hers."

Also competing for Tabor were Ashley Schmidt (41st, 21:22), Carrie Schroeder (46th, 21:38), Jera Teselle (65th, 23:19), and Leah Kopper (66th, 23:23).

The men finished fifth among 12 colleges competing.

Freshman Dan Sigley (19th, 28:07) finished first on the squad in each of the season's last three meets and set a new personal record on Saturday by reducing his time by 25 seconds.

"Dan ran a very smart and competitive race," Hunt said. "He has adjusted to the 8-kilometer distance this season."

Zac Remboldt (33rd, 28:59) and Caleb Schroeder (35th, 29:03) both set new personal records.

"Zac broke into the 28s for the first time," Hunt said.

The four seniors running in their final college race finished ahead of Ric Johnson (63rd, 30:58) and Brandon Voth (64th, 31:10).

Johnson set a new personal record and Voth tied his.

Seniors Jeff Anenson (41st, 29:28), Kyle Larson (45th, 29:33), Kevin Larson (54th, 20:15) and Will Higerd (58th, 30:38) rounded out the Tabor team.

"All four (seniors) ran with a lot of heart today. We talked about this being a race that they would remember for the rest of their lives," Hunt said.

"Will ran the race of his life and set a new personal record. He literally left nothing on the course and reduced his best time by almost a minute," Hunt said.

Anenson and Kevin Larson both ran season-best times.

"The season ended on a high note for us," Hunt said. "I think both the men and the women maximized their abilities this season.

"For me, it's tough to see the season come to a close. We had a good team chemistry, a real family atmosphere. The group practiced really hard, worked through the challenges, and we enjoyed a lot of success."
