The Tabor College volleyball team went 1-1 this week in conference matches against Bethany and Bethel.
Ashley Malcom led the Bluejays to a 30-22, 35-33, 30-22 home victory over the Swedes, tallying 13 kills and five aces to go with 12 digs.
Lindsey Vogts-who earned conference player of the week honors leading up to Oct. 3-put down 14 kills to go with seven blocks and Kelsi Suderman had nine kills and three aces on Tuesday.
"Bethany was a good win for us," coach Amy Ratzlaff said. "They played a good defensive game, so we had to stick with the rally a little longer, and that was good for us to work through."
Malcom, Vogts and Suderman combined for 36 kills on 72 attacks with eight errors for a 36 percent attack rating against the Swedes.
Against the Threshers on Thursday, the trio rated at 25 percent on 81 attempts.
But no Bluejay struggled more noticeably this week than Staci Frick, who managed nine kills and five errors on 30 tries against Bethel to go with six kills and five errors on 43 tries at Bethany.
The statistics from the Bethel game tell only part of the story.
"We had a lot of unusual errors for us and did not do a great job of executing our offense," Ratzlaff said.
Tabor started the night with a 30-26 victory in the first game before a 30-17 Game 2 Thresher victory turned the tide against the visitors.
With a raucous crowd behind them, Bethel opened up a 4-0 lead in the third game and cruised to a 30-26 win.
The fourth game also started 4-0 and the Threshers finished the night with a 30-17 win.
Bethel's win may have been strong, but the Thresher game plan seemed to emphasize softer shots in the face of the Bluejay blockers.
That the soft shots fell may be as attributable to the Bethel crowd as to the Threshers themselves.
"(Bethel) will just be a good reminder that we need to continue working," Ratzlaff said. "It helped us to see some of the bugs we need to work through to be a better team in the second round than we were in the first."
Tabor is now 8-1 in conference play and 10-9 overall.
The contests against Tabor resulted in Bethel improving to 7-2 and Bethany dropping to 3-6.
The Bluejays play home games against St. Mary on Wednesday night and McPherson on Friday.
