--Centre beat Quivera Heights 30-14 on Friday on the strength of defense and a reliable ground game.
Quivera Heights went on top 8-0 with a 11-yard run and 2-point conversion run with 10:46 left in the first quarter.
Alfonse Klenda got Centre on the board with a 15-yard scoop and score on a Quivera fumble; the conversion run was stopped short at the 2:04 mark in the first quarter.
either team would score again in the half, but Thieen Antoszyk put the Cougars ahead to stay with a 19-yard run with 4:25 to go in the third quarter.
Antoszyk, who ran in the 2-point try, finished with 107 yards on 16 attempts.
Centre denied Quivera Heights any thoughts of a comeback with scores 2:20 apart early in the fourth quarter.
Lance Diepenbrock hammered in a 2-yard run at 11:58 and Antoszyk crashed the Quivera end zone from 10 yards out.
Diepenbrock ran in both conversion to make the score 30-8.
Diepenbrock finished with 80 yards on 12 carries.
"We played a very good second half," coach Kelly Steiner said. "Lance and Thieen both ran the ball well."
With the game out of reach, Quivera quarterback Nathan White put up a 49-yard completion to post the final score.
Centre will play Burrton at home on Friday night.
-- Goessel standout Garret Hiebert ran for 135 yards, threw for 177 more, and had a hand in five Bluebird touchdowns as GHS downed Little River 40-8.
Hiebert got the visiting team out of the gates quickly with a 37-yard run in the first quarter. Travis Buller caught the conversion from Hiebert and would finish with 42 rushing yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Brett Goerzen scored on a pass from Hiebert later in the first quarter; he finished with 71 yards on three catches and two receiving touchdowns to go with 59 yards on 10 carries.
Sheldon Goerzen caught a 60-yard strike from Hiebert in the second quarter and would finish with 4 receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
But Hiebert carried the night for the Goessel offense with a 12.3 yard/carry rushing average to go with 8 of 13 passing.
Defensively, Kurtis Duerksen and Grady Petersen turned in dominant performances.
Petersen led the team in tackles and Duerksen ransacked the Quivera backfield with two tackles for loss and two sacks.
Goessel is now 5-1 overall and is set to meet Sunrise Christian in Goessel on Friday night.
-- In other Friday night action around the HOA, Canton-Galva shut out Sedgwick 18-0 and Hutch Trinity doubled up Peabody-Burns 28-14.
Both teams played on the road. Additional results were not available at press time.
This Friday, CGHS meets St. John at home and PBHS meets Chase County in Peabody.
