--Centre beat Quivera Heights 30-14 on Friday on the strength of defense and a reliable ground game.

Quivera Heights went on top 8-0 with a 11-yard run and 2-point conversion run with 10:46 left in the first quarter.

Alfonse Klenda got Centre on the board with a 15-yard scoop and score on a Quivera fumble; the conversion run was stopped short at the 2:04 mark in the first quarter.

either team would score again in the half, but Thieen Antoszyk put the Cougars ahead to stay with a 19-yard run with 4:25 to go in the third quarter.

Antoszyk, who ran in the 2-point try, finished with 107 yards on 16 attempts.

Centre denied Quivera Heights any thoughts of a comeback with scores 2:20 apart early in the fourth quarter.

Lance Diepenbrock hammered in a 2-yard run at 11:58 and Antoszyk crashed the Quivera end zone from 10 yards out.

Diepenbrock ran in both conversion to make the score 30-8.

Diepenbrock finished with 80 yards on 12 carries.

"We played a very good second half," coach Kelly Steiner said. "Lance and Thieen both ran the ball well."

With the game out of reach, Quivera quarterback Nathan White put up a 49-yard completion to post the final score.

Centre will play Burrton at home on Friday night.

-- Goessel standout Garret Hiebert ran for 135 yards, threw for 177 more, and had a hand in five Bluebird touchdowns as GHS downed Little River 40-8.

Hiebert got the visiting team out of the gates quickly with a 37-yard run in the first quarter. Travis Buller caught the conversion from Hiebert and would finish with 42 rushing yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Brett Goerzen scored on a pass from Hiebert later in the first quarter; he finished with 71 yards on three catches and two receiving touchdowns to go with 59 yards on 10 carries.

Sheldon Goerzen caught a 60-yard strike from Hiebert in the second quarter and would finish with 4 receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

But Hiebert carried the night for the Goessel offense with a 12.3 yard/carry rushing average to go with 8 of 13 passing.

Defensively, Kurtis Duerksen and Grady Petersen turned in dominant performances.
