The Hillsboro tennis team capped a busy week-three challenging tournaments in seven days-by placing second and fifth at its own invitational on Monday.

The tournament originally was scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed because of weather.

On the courts Monday, the Hillsboro Gold team scored 42 points to fall six points short of the champs from Wichita Independent in an eight-team field.

Lora Andrews (3-0) won the No. 2 singles flight while her traditional doubles partner, Amanda Faber (2-1), placed second in No. 1 singles for the Gold team.

Audrey Weinbrenner and Greta Wiebe (2-1) placed third in No. 1 doubles and Lauren Just and Chelsey Harmon placed third in No. 2 singles.

For Hillsboro Red, which scored 16 team points, Tessa Simpson (2-1) placed fifth and Julia Loewen (1-2) sixth in No. 1 singles, Clara Ens (0-3) placed eighth in No. 2 singles, Amber Loewen and Maria Loewen (1-2) placed fourth in No. 1 doubles and Anna Woelk and Kelsey Bartel (2-1) placed fifth in No. 2 doubles.

Collegiate TOC-Competing in one of the state's toughest high school tennis challenges, Hillsboro placed 10th among 15 teams at the Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

The Trojans managed 25 points while tournament winner Maize compiled 81.

The state-tested doubles team of Lora Andrews and Amanda Faber placed seventh with a 3-2 record to pace HHS.

The next-best performance came from singles player Audrey Weinbrenner, who placed 12th at 2-3. Lauren Just went 1-2 in singles and Chelsey Harmon and Greta Wiebe were 1-3 in doubles.

Collegiate Invitational-Hillsboro placed fifth in a tough nine-team field at Wichita Sept. 19.

Salina Central won the team title with 29 points while Hillsboro finished with 15.

"There was a lot of great tennis played," coach Lynn Wiebe said. "Salina Central, Wichita Collegiate, Goddard and Winfield have very strong tennis programs and have some of the best players in the state."

Hillsboro's top performance of the afternoon was turned in by the No. 1 doubles team of Lora Andrews and Amanda Faber (2-1), who placed third.

Audrey Weinbrenner (2-1) place fifth in No. 1 singles, Lauren Just (1-2) seventh in No. 2 singles and Chelsey Harmon and Greta Wiebe (1-2) sixth in No. 2 doubles.

Coming-Coming off a three-tournament week, the Trojans varsity won't compete again until Sept. 30 at the Mid-Central Activities Association league meet in Hesston.

Matches begin at 9 a.m.
