Marion library to hold fall storytime
The Marion City Library's "Fall Into Reading" storytime for children ages 3 to 6 will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday mornings from Oct. 6 through through Nov. 17.
The time will include stories, activities and crafts.

Rock Shop Ruins grand opening bash
The Rock Shop Ruins remote-control racetrack will hold its grand opening and free fall bash Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
Located a quarter-mile east of the Rock Shop on Nighthawk Road, four miles north of the Peabody water tower or 10 miles south of the Marion Reservoir dam, the three-acre area has four tracks, including two off-road racing tracks, a high-banked dirt oval and a full-sand drag strip.
The grand opening event will feature demonstrations by local racing groups as well as hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks for sale.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Centennial event set for courthouse
The public is invited to attend an open house and reception Sept. 29 to celebrate 100 years of service for the Marion County Courthouse, 200 S. Third, Marion.
Opening ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a reception and courthouse tours from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additional tours will also be offered from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in conjunction with Old Settler's Day.
Historical items will be on display and special commemorative items will be available for purchase on both days.
County CROP Walk planned for Oct. 8
CROP Walk 2006 will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Marion County Lake.
A devotional will be held prior to the walk.
Proceeds from the annual fund-raiser support the ministry of Church World Service, particularly the hunger-fighting development efforts of partner agencies in more than 80 countries.
Contributors may designate their own denominational relief agency to receive their contributions.
The Marion County CROP Walk has chosen to designate 25 percent of its funds to the Marion County Emergency Food Bank.

HCMC plans Oct. 14 Memory Walk
On behalf of the Wichita regional chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Hillsboro Community Medical Center is organizing a Memory Walk for Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Tabor College track.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10 a.m. Individuals or teams may participate.
The walk is two miles, which is eight laps around the track.
All team captains will receive a prize. Incentive prizes will also be awarded.
The Memory Walk is the primary fund-raising and public-awareness event of the Alzheimer's Association.

TC Bible conference planned for Oct. 1-2
The Tabor College Bible Conference will take place Oct. 1 and 2, featuring Roger Poppen, senior pastor of Laurelglen Bible Church, Bakersfield, Calif.
The theme for the event is "Following By Faith," focusing on passages from Hebrews 11.
Session 2, "Working Faith," will take place Monday at 1:30 p.m., and session 3, "Courageous Faith," concludes the conference at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.
Sunday's session will be in the gymnasium. The other two sessions will be in the Chapel-Auditorium.
The Tabor College Concert Choir and Symphonic Band will perform Sunday evening.
After graduating from Biola College, La Miranda, Calif., Poppen attended and graduated from Western Baptist Seminary, Portland, Ore.
Poppen has been pastor of five churches over the past 38 years. For the past 17 years, he has been senior pastor of Laurelglen Bible Church, a Mennonite Brethren congregation, where he leads a staff of eight pastors and preaches weekly to about 1,100 people.
Another conference, targeted specifically to pastors, will also occur Monday. Activities include a seminar, lunch and golf outing.

Maxwell refuge event Oct. 6, 7
The 12th annual Mountain Man Rendezvous will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 and 7 at the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge near Canton.
Buffalo tours will depart every hour. Other activities include arts and crafts, traders, bird walks and displays, Kansas Flintknappers Knap-In and concessions with buffalo burgers.
Musical entertainment for the weekend will be Thad Beach at 10 a.m. and Tall Grass Express at 12:30 p.m. Friday and Don Wagner and Bill Burrows at 10 a.m. and Sons of the Konza Prairie at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
A benefit auction will be at 6 p.m. Friday.
Admission at the gate is $2 per person, plus a $5 charge for the tour. Children under 4 are admitted free.

Marion's Hayen to hold book signing
Marion native Don Hayen will hold a book signing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the Marion City Library.
His first work of fiction, "Moonshine Harvest," is set in Marion.
Hayen lives in California, where he practiced medicine for 30 years, specializing in dermatology. He has twice won the Physician's Writer Contest for Medical Economic Magazine.
The public is invited to attend the book signing.
Kansans for Life to support 'Life Chain'
Marion County Kansans for Life members are encouraging the public to join them for "The National Life Chain" from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1.
Participants can show support against abortion at one of two sites in Marion County: the intersection of U.S. Highway 56 and Nighthawk near the former Canada School, or at Florence on U.S. Highway 50 at Williams Service Station. Signs will be available at each site.

Centre High School student council is collecting supplies to send to the overseas U.S. troop of Marion County native Simon Makovec.
The following items may be taken to CHS or Centre Elementary School by Oct. 6: Twizzlers, Mike 'N' Ikes, beef jerky, snack bars, nuts, sunflower seeds, fruit snacks, wrapped hard candy, animal crackers, canned chips, trail mix, writing paper and pens, magazines, CDs, DVDs, phone cards, AAA batteries, sunscreen, razors, shaving cream, aftershave (no glass bottles), cooling powders or cooling neck wraps.
Quilt Guild meeting moved to Oct. 16
The Country Stitcher's Quilt Guild meeting and "Quilt Bus" visit scheduled for Oct. 2 have been postponed due to family illness.
The monthly meeting has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church social hall.
Kathleen Heinrichs of Reedley, Calif., will be the guest speaker. She is chair of the West Coast Mennonite Central Committee quilt auction and heads up the MCC sewing room in Reedley.
Chat and Dine, dedication Oct. 7
Celebrating Marion County Park and Lake's history and heritage is the theme for Chat and Dine activities Saturday, Oct. 7.
Activities begin at 5 p.m. at the CCC commemorative statue for the dedication of the historical marker, a gift from the family of Edward McBurney, superintendent and engineer for the construction of the lake dam.
Following will be social hour at the Lake Hall and lasagna dinner at 6:30 p.m., with members bringing side dishes.
Landon Leiker will present "Revisiting the Original Marion County Park and Lake."
Other activities will include birthday and anniversary recognitions and drawing for a schoolhouse birdhouse donated by Nadine Iseli. The birdhouse will be on display at Central Park Antiques Emporium in Marion until Oct. 7.
Hosting are Helen and Dwight Beckham, Marilyn and Larry Hamler, Gwen Heckathorn and Clara Bremer. Among invited guests are the Cleland McBurney family and Marion County commissioners.
