TC Bluejays fumble at Bethel

The Bluejays led at the half, but Threshers took the game out of Tabor's hands in the third quarter. With a 26-10 loss to Bethel on Sat. night, Tabor's record fell to 1-2. The Bluejay defense started the game by stopping the Threshers on third and 5 at their own six to force a field goal, and Ricky Ishida found Aaron Jenkins wide open for an 80 yard score that put gave TC an early 7-3 lead. Each team would add a field goal before the half, and TC carried a 10-6 lead into the third quarter. But the third frame did not go well for the men in blue; the Threshers opened the half with a 50-yard scoring drive that shifted the score in Bethel's favor,12-10. Bethel quarterback Brett Clow twice found wideout Chad Hershberger open--first for a gain of 23 yards and again for a 16 yard touchdown. Bethel then forced a three-and-out, and Derik Martinez came on to punt. Martinez had five punts for 210 yards on the night, but on this occasion, a return by Hershberger put the Threshers at midfield to start their second drive of the second half. A short Clow completion began the drive, and runningback Beau Cox carved his way down field for 37 yards on one dash and finished the drive by crashing 2 yards into the end zone. A Michael Montez PAT put Bethel up 19-10 with 6:02 to play in the quarter. Tabor's next offensive possession ran three plays and ended with a fumble; Cox promptly broke off a 23 yard run to set up a 3-yard touchdown, his second of the game. Neither team would score in the fourth quarter as both defenses stopped attempted fourth down conversions and forced fumbles. As time wound down with the Bluejays pressing for a score, quarterback DeJuan Jones moved Tabor to the Bethel 4 before a fumble put the ball back in the Threshers' hands. Cox added his final 2 yards--he had 171 yards on 27 carries for the evening to go with two touchdowns--to set the game's last seconds ticking off of the clock. Tabor passed for 178 yards through the air but was held to 72 on the ground. Caleb Marsh was limited to 2 punt returns for 15 yards, and Tabor quarterbacks combined to complete 6 of their 21 pass attempts. Six penalties cost the Bluejays 109 yards. With 10 first downs against 26 for Bethel, time of possession tipped over 14 minutes in the Threshers' favor. Tabor lost two fumbles to the Threshers' one, and neither team threw an interception.
