The Peabody Burns Warriors defeated the Canton-Galva Eagles 30-28 in Peabody on Friday night.
In a game where every inch mattered, the Warriors benefitted from 32 yards gained by Trevor Hamm and 20 yards from Nathan Bishop.
Will Pratt kicked three of four extra points and booted a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter that secured victory.
Nathan Bishop, Trevor Hamm and Cole Welsh all caught passes for PBHS, but Todd Woodruff made huge contributions on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Derrick Simmonds completed three of four passes for 27 yards, and Woodruff added a 13-yard completion of his own.
But by far the bulk of the PBHS offense came when Simmonds simply handed off to Woodruff, who ran for 157 yards and scored four touchdowns.
In addition to carrying 17 times without a fumble, Woodruff recovered two Eagle fumbles. Defensively he piled up six solo tackles, two assists, two deflected passes and a tackle for loss.
But Woodruff's effort nearly went for naught as a balanced attack by Canton-Galva resulted in 376 total yards.
Down 13-6 after the first quarter, the Eagles regrouped and kept the game within reach.
As the night wore on, CGHS built a 4:16 edge in time of possession as the visiting Eagles ran 19 more plays than their counterparts on their way to generating 126 more yards than the home team.
With 184 yards and two scores on the ground in support of 192 yards and two scores through the air, the Eagles outperformed the Warriors in nearly every statistic.
The Eagles made a first down 19 times on the night-eight more than the Warriors-and converted on 10 of the 12 third downs they faced.
Although both teams struggled defensively, the Warrior defense made three decisive plays: Adam Benson recorded an interception, Pratt recovered a fumble and Woodruff returned an interception 23 yards.
The Warriors won the turnover battle 3-0. Bishop got in on 12 tackles-seven solo-and forced two fumbles.
Individual statistics for Canton-Galva were not available at press time.
