Marion native Molly Holub, a specialist assigned to the Army's Fourth Armored Division in Iraq, was injured last week when an improvised explosive device exploded nearby while she was on assignment with a military police company.
According to family members, Holub was a turret gunner on a Humvee providing security for road block. While they were setting up, the IED detonated near her vehicle.
Holub, hit by shrapnel, was the only person in her unit injured by the explosion. She was evacuated to Camp Anaconda in Iraq, then flown to Longstuhl Air Force Base in Germany.
According to family, Holub sustained a concussion, broken bones in her face and is blind in the left eye. Her injuries were not life threatening.
On Sunday, Holub was flown to Walter Reed Army Hospital outside Washington, D.C., for further evaluation. Family members, who flew to Washington on Sunday to be with her, said it will take time there to evaluate how to proceed. But she is expected to have to undergo several surgeries to address her facial injuries.
Holub is the daughter of Dan and Rhonda Holub of rural Marion.
Cards and correspondence can be sent to her at this address for the next week or so: Spec. Molly Holub, Room 318, Malone House Hotel, 6900 Georgia Ave., NW Building 20, Washington, D.C. 20307.
