Peabody-Burns head count on first day of new school year is 380 students

The Peabody-Burns Board of Education heard at its Aug. 14 meeting that its schools welcomed 380 students when doors opened earlier that day for the start of the 2006-07 school year.
The breakdown by class was reported as follows: kindergarten 14 students, first grade 20, second grade 24, third grade 23, fourth grade 36, fifth grade 17, sixth grade 26, seventh grade 27, eighth grade 36, ninth grade 43, 10th grade 40, 11th grade 31 and 12th grade 43.
High school principal Mary Brown introduced four new teachers to the board: Jack Coleman, instrumental and vocal music; Krystal Bruce, science; Kurt Herrel, math; and Patrice Jones, Title I and Spanish.
Brown also shared information on three new special-education teachers as well as Steve Thorburn, the new vocational agriculture teacher.
Verna Ploutz was introduced by Superintendent Tom Alstrom as the new counselor at the elementary school.
The board discussed, but took no action on, possible boundary adjustments within its member districts given population figures supplied by Alstrom.
The state requires that the population of a member district must be within a 5 percent variance above or below the mean population of other member districts, or else the boundaries must be adjusted.
Alstrom said the Kansas 2000 Census maps of the Peabody-Burns school district indicate Peabody has 1,384 people, Burns has 268 and the rural areas have 983.
Other business
In other matters, the board:
-- reviewed information from Alstrom about adding a security system for the junior high and high school. High school administrators Brown and Ray Savage said a system would improve security for the building and help with discipline problems. The board asked for a breakdown of costs for smaller packages within different areas of the building.
-- asked the Breaking Ranks Committee to suggest which fine-arts requirement should be added to meet the Tier I Course Requirements for valedictorian and salutatorian selection.
A unit of fine arts must be added to the three required units within natural science that have already been identified.
-- ratified the negotiated agreement for the 2006-07 year, then appointed board president Doe Ann Hague and member Gary Jones to the district's negotiating team for 2007-08.
-- earmarked 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 for a board retreat. The location will be determined at the board's September meeting.
-- watched as Alstrom presented Hague with the Kansas Association of School Boards' "Certificate of Achievement Silver Award."
