Lutheran churches plan lake service

Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, and Zion Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, are inviting the public to a worship service at the Marion Reservoir on Sunday, July 23.

The service, which will begin at 9:30 a.m., will be at Shelter A, Cottonwood Point.

Those who want to attend are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, and stay afterward for food and fellowship.

Lincolnville building done, but not ready

Lincolnville city leaders have announced that the town's community building is now complete.

The state has not yet signed over the building to the city and it has no furnishing. Until that changes, no reservations will be taken.

City leaders will inform the public in the Free Press when new information is available.

Zoo to be featured at Marion Library

Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina will be presenting a program with animals at 7 p.m. Friday, July 28.

The program pertains to the story, "The Great Kapok Tree." Following the program, children and adults who participated in the library's summer reading program can take part in a pet show and contest.

Prizes will be awarded for most talented pet, smallest pet, biggest pet, most unusual pet, cutest costume, most unusual name, oldest pet, longest ears, cutest pet and the pet that looks most like its owner.

Pets must be preregistered for the contest by calling the library at 620-382-2442. All pets must be leashed or caged.

The public is welcome to attend the outdoor event, which is sponsored by the library and Tampa State Bank. Those who come may want to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

KMMC first concert planned for July 30

Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus will present a pre-tour concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, at First Mennonite Church in McPherson.

The concert launches the 37th year of KMMC ministry. Each year more than 250 men gather to prepare for the concert season.

Donations collected at concerts go to Mennonite Central Committee, which sends food to needy people around the world. Since its beginning, KMMC has raised more than $500,000 for MCC.

In August, between 50 and 60 members of the chorus will tour the Midwest and East Coast.

First Mennonite Church is located at the corner of Maxwell Street and Avenue A in McPherson.

HUMC plans 5-week summer series

Hillsboro United Methodist Church is inviting the public to a five-week series of Sunday-morning activities on the theme "Adventure of the Treasure Seekers."

The series begins July 23 and concludes Aug. 20. Sunday school sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. and worship services at 10:30 a.m.

According to church leaders, the sessions will explore the Bible stories involving Ruth, David, the Parable of the Good Shepherd, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and Jesus's return to his disciples after the resurrection.

As part of the series, the church will be gathering supplies for Methodist Youthville and the Hillsboro and Goessel school districts.

The series will culminate with an all-church dinner following the Aug. 20 worship service.

Participants are encouraged to dress casually for the five-week gatherings.

Open house set for Crowther birthdays

A birthday open house is planned for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 30, to mark the 89th birthday of Wilma Crowther on Aug. 3 and the 80th birthday of Glennon Crowther on July 30.

The event will be at the Roxbury United Parish Church in Roxbury. The hosts will be Gay and Katie Weis, Gaylord Decker and Karen Sutton, Wendell and Karleen Burch, Steve and Lynnie Crowther and Jim and Darla Crowther.

Wilma Kaiser was born in Canton and has spent her life in the Canton-Roxbury area. She was married in 1937 to Ronald Crowther, who died in 1999. She has been a homemaker.

"Glenny" Crowther was born in Roxbury and has lived in Marion County all his life. He was married to Doris Zietlow in 1946. A retired farmer/stockman, he more recently retired from his construction business.

The honorees request no gifts.

Veterans rep will miss Aug. 1 visit

Richard W. Haywood, Veterans' Services representative, will not be available for appointments at the Marion County Health Department on Tuesday, Aug. 1, because of another commitment.

Maxwell plans day tour for Aug. 5

Maxwell Wildlife Refuge near Canton will host "A Bloomin' Good Tour" Saturday, Aug.5.

The full-day itinerary will begin at the refuge with a guided tour aboard a tram-a modern-day covered wagon-to view the smoky hill prairie and identify wild flowers along the trail.

Following the tour, participants will journey to Three Sisters Victorian Tea & Treasures in Canton for lunch and Victorian language about the flowers display and tea garden.

After lunch, the group will caravan to three backyard gardens, each with a different themes:

n Mary Williams, "A Cozy Cottage Garden," a mixture of shade and sun-loving plants;

n Owen and Della Meier, "Meanwhile Out West," a variety of grasses, wild flowers and annuals, all with a Western touch;

n Marvin and Tracey Wert, "Tea in the Garden," featuring 28 themed sitting areas, 17 arbors, a secret garden and a log cabin. Dessert will be served at this location.

Guitarist to give Ebenfeld concert

Classical guitarist Dave Smart will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 30 at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, located near Hillsboro.

Smart's repertoire will feature worship and praise songs, favorite hymns and timeless classics. He has given concerts with Christian and secular artists such as Roy Clark, NewSong, First Call, Larnel Harris and Pat Methany.

Smart will also perform during the morning worship service.

Community hymn sing set for Sunday

A community hymn sing is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center at Tabor College.

Jonah Kliewer will direct the sing time.
