Action items at the Unified School District 410 Board of Education meeting Monday primarily included elections and appointments for board operations and employment and financial items for the upcoming 2006-07 school.
Rod Koons was elected board president and Eddie Weber was elected vice president for the coming year.
By consensus, the board appointed board members as representatives to the following positions: Debbie Geis, Marion County Special Education Cooperative; Weber, MCSEC alternative; Mark Rooker, Technology Excellence in Education Network; Koons, chief negotiator; Dale Klassen, assistant negotiator; Gary Andrews, Professional Development Council; and Brent Barkman, Kansas Association of School Boards Governmental Relations.
The board also:
-- approved the district's 2006-07 membership in the KASB and participation in the organization's Legal Assistance Fund. Dues total $8,244, which includes the increase of $1,614 for KASB membership.
-- set 2006-07 meal prices at the same rate as 2005-06.
-- established student fees to remain the same as the 2005-06 school year.
-- voted 4-1 to keep textbook fees the same as last year, rather than increase them as recommended by Superintendent Gordon Mohn.
-- revised the school calendar for 2006-07 to allow for a staff development day Monday, Sept. 18, to cover training for Measures of Academic Progress, which will be used in assessing student learning.
-- approved replacing the compensation section of the drivers' education instructor's contract to be based on the number of students who pay the enrollment fee for the course.
Currently, it's been according to the number of students who complete the course.
-- approved issuance of classified contracts to David Espada in the custodial/maintenance department, Charles Rempel as bus driver and custodian and Jill Hein as an academic skills aide at Hillsboro High School.
-- accepted Jake Janzen's resignation as bus driver.
-- established the substitute teacher pay rate at $85 per day-the same as this past year-for the upcoming school year.
-- approved a 3 percent pay increase for non-contracted classified personnel.
Mohn reviewed a timeline for financial planning and budget preparation that may require an additional special meeting at the beginning of August.
The board also discussed options related to compliance with legislation that requires population in each board member district to be equalized. No action was taken.
Board members Barkman and Rooker were absent from Monday's meeting.
