Emma Jean Herbel

Emma Jean Herbel, 72, retired train order clerk, died June 23 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, St. Francis campus of Wichita.

The service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, officiated by pastor Brett Huebner. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hillsboro.

She was born Jan. 20, 1934, to Virgil and Vontice Harvey Turner in Magee, Miss. She was married to Don Herbel, who predeceased her in 2005.

Survivors include two sons, David Edward Herbel of Marietta, Okla., and Glen Alan Herbel of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; three daughters, Gayla Jean Herbel of Loveland, Colo., Barbra Ann Harris of Marietta, Okla., and Greta Louis Slade of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Andrew Turner of Mississippi; two sisters, Genie Bell Graham of Topeka and Patricia Robertson of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A memorial fund was established for Zion Lutheran Church.

Verna Pankratz

Verna (Schroeder) Pankratz, 99, retired telephone operator and homemaker, died June 21 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

The service was held June 24 at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro with pastor Randy Smith officiating. Burial was at Haven of Rest Cemetery in rural Hillsboro.

She was born Aug. 10, 1906, to Gerhard A. and Anna (Bartel) Schroeder in Hillsboro. In 1929 she was married to Henry E. Pankratz, who predeceased her in 1990.

She is survived by a son, Stuart and Bobbi Pankratz of Lansing, Mich.; a daughter, Farol and Lawrence Bale of Kansas City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with First Mennonite Church of Hillsboro.

Max L. Skinner

Max L. Skinner, 68, of Marion died Friday, June 23, at St Luke Hospital in Marion.

Private family services have been scheduled for a later date.

He was born Jan. 5, 1938, to Garry and Virgie (Maltbie) Skinner at Florence.

Survivors include two brothers, Dean Skinner of Joplin, Mo., and John Skinner of Edmond, Okla.; and two sisters, Mary Lou Phillips of Marion and Martha Dornbush of Marion.

Memorial funds have been established with the Union Rescue Mission and Florence Ambulance Service.
