The Hillsboro Art & Crafts Association is planning its second annual home garden tour for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 25.
This year's tour includes three homes in the Carriage Hills housing addition: Jim and Nancy Cloutier, 1105 Parkway Court; Bob and Betty Seibel, 206 Briarwood; and Larry and Sherry Cole, 303 Briarwood Lane.
Tickets for the entire tour can be purchased for $3 at any of the three homes on the day of the event.
Open house to celebrate 80th
The family of Doris David extends an invitation to an open house to celebrate her 80th birthday. The open house will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at the Senior Center in Hillsboro.
Hosts for the celebration will be her six children: Bob Dalke, DeVon Kelley, Helen Hagen, Kris Pschigoda, Russ Dalke and Scott David, along with her 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family requests no gifts.
HFAC to host two weekend events
The Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center will be hosting two events this weekend.
On Saturday, June 17, the facility will host the first of two swim meets scheduled for the Hillsboro Swim Team. The competition, which includes teams from Marion and Peabody, begins at 9 a.m. and will continue into the afternoon.
There is no admission charge for people want to observe the meet.
In observance of Fathers Day on Sunday, the facility will offer a "Father-Son Build Your Own Raft" competition from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by The Lumberyard in Hillsboro.
Father-son pairs will be provided with the materials needed to build a raft. Prizes will go for "best of show" and "best flotation."
The only entry fee is regular admission into the facility.
Card shower to mark 99th birthday
The family of Irene (Waner) Nienstedt invites friends and family to send cards to commemorate her 99th birthday July 2.
Nienstedt was a long-time resident of Florence.

Northview donates canned goods
Northview Developmental Services Inc. of Newton recently donated canned goods to Main Street Ministries of Hillsboro.
The donation was the organization's "Good Deed" to thank local legislators for their support of issues and funding that impact the lives of those with disabilities.
Northview participated with other organizations in Kansas in "166 Good Deeds" in communities around the state on behalf of their legislators for their dedication to disability issues.
Northview collected canned goods from its staff, people in service and guardians.
Individuals in service and their staff took donations to local food pantries. The also assisted food pantry staff with sorting and organizing.
Kansas legislators who represent Northview's Marion County catchment area include Sen. Jim Barnett, Sen. Jay Emler and Rep. Don Dahl.
Klenda receives
FFA scholarship
The National FFA Organization awarded a $1,000 Dodge Trucks scholarship to Jacquelyn Klenda of Centre High School FFA.
Dodge Trucks, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, sponsors the scholarship, one of 1,821 awarded by the national organization.
Klenda plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Kansas State University.
Recipients were selected from more than 6,000 applicants. Criteria included academic record, FFA and other activities, supervised agricultural experience and future goals.
Rep. Eric Carter to address Kiwanis
State Rep. Eric Carter, vice chairman of the House insurance committee and Republican candidate for Kansas Commissioner of Insurance, will present a legislative update to the Hillsboro Kiwanis at noon Tuesday, June 20.
Carter will discuss topics from the recently concluded legislative session, including issues before the House Insurance Committee and will make a presentation on the pending health insurance crisis in Kansas.
Carter, an attorney practicing in the areas of insurance regulatory and health law, represents the 48th House District.
USAA announces award winner
The U.S. Achievement Academy announced recently that Jesse Seibel, Lawrenceville, Ga., has been named a U.S. national award winner in areas of foreign language and mathematics.
Seibel, who attends Covenant Christian Academy, was nominated for this national award by a teacher. His name will appear in the USAA's official annual yearbook.
Criteria for selection includes a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities and citizenship.
Seibel is the son of Clyde and Gaylene Seibel of Lawrenceville, Ga., His grandparents are Irene Seibel of Hillsboro and Rosey Martens of Hesston.
Open house for Jane Nickel
An open house to celebrate Jane Nickel's 80th birthday is planned for 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro.
She was born July 31, 1916, at Whitewater and was a long-term resident of Buhler. She moved to Hillsboro two years ago.
On Sept. 6, 1936, she was married to Henry P. Nickel in Reedley, Calif. He died in 1995.
Her children are Jeanette and Clarence Funk of Fresno, Calif.; Myrna and Tim Kliewer of Hillsboro; David and Mary Nickel of Oakhurst, Calif.; and Sylvia and Rick Allen of Corvallis, Ore. She has six grandchildren and six great-grand- children.

Centre Leos donate toward furnishings
Centre Leos Club presented a check for $125 to Lincolnville city manager Scott Gutsch during the Lincolnville city meeting June 6.
The donation was designated for the community building to purchase tables and chairs.
The check was presented by Centre Leos representatives Justine Jennings, secretary/ treasurer, and Lori Moldenhauer, adviser.
Nikki Stenzel, president, could not attend.
Family to host centenarian's party
The family of Amelia Vinduska invites friends and family to celebrate her 100th birthday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in the basement of St. John Nepomucene Church in Pilsen.

History association completes grant
The Moundridge Historical Association has completed a Heritage grant from the Kansas Humanities Council for the purpose of preserving 2,860 photographs of early Kansas.
The $3,100 grant consisted of four major parts:
-- To preserve all of the photographs-identifying, labeling and storing them appropriately according to museum standards under the guidance of a consultant from the Kansas Historical Society.
-- To enlarge 51 photographs of interest to the community to be labeled, mounted and laminated and used as a traveling exhibit.
-- To enlarge 25 photographs of the Cole family to be used at the Cole House Museum in Moundridge for tours and general information.
-- To digitally reproduce 100 photographs and store them on compact discs to provide public access to the collection at the Moundridge Public Library and Moundridge High School.
Principle funding for the program is provided by KHC, a non-profit cultural organization promoting understanding of the history, traditions and ideas that shape our lives and build community.
The Moundridge association will provide labor to accomplish the project, estimated to be $6,000.
"We will use this project to strengthen our partnerships with our schools and other interested groups by providing a window to our community's history," said Rosemary Fisher of the association.

Gospel singer to present concert at Ebenfeld church
Baritone Earnest Alexander will present a concert at 7 p.m. June 18 at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church.
The church is located at 1498 Kanza Road near Hillsboro.
Born in Selma, Ala., during a turbulent time in U.S. history, Alexander was raised in a home of seven children and his mother. As a boy, he became impressed with gospel music.
Today he uses his singing and travels worldwide to express his commitment to God and youth of his community.
The concert is free to the public. An offering will be taken to benefit "Youth Horizons," a non-profit ministry that targets troubled and at-risk youth in the Wichita area.
