After more than an hour in executive session that included sessions with both activities director Max Heinrichs and Hillsboro High School principal Dale Honeck, the board voted to issue supplemental contracts for coaching positions to the following people for the 2006-07 school year:

-- Honeck to serve as head the head high school girls' basketball coach.

-- Keli Chisholm to serve as an assistant high school girls' basketball coach.

-- Jim Robb to serve as an assistant track coach.

-- Doug Dick to serve as assistant middle school football coach.

The board also approved issuing teaching contracts to the following:

-- Claire Overstake to serve as a fifth-grade teacher.

-- Elynne Wiebe to serve as the Title I teacher at Hillsboro Elementary School.

-- Sharon Jost to serve in a half-time Title I teaching position at HES.

-- Mickey Harvey to serve as a HMS and HHS technology teacher.

The board also approved a supplemental contract to Harvey for two positions-technology facilitator, which involves responsibility for Channel 45, and Technology Student Association co-sponsor.

In other personnel issues, the board:

-- accepted resignations from Tracy Isaac as HHS secretary and Norma Cabeen and Vicki Hiebert as food service employees.

-- approved issuing a classified employee contract to Lisa Mayfield as high school secretary.

-- approved issuing a contract to Shelli Elliott to serve as TEEN director.

Regarding contracts and salaries for classified employees, the board agreed to delay taking action on contract renewal and establishment of salaries until a special board meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. July 26.

At that meeting, the board will also approve an amended 2005-06 budget that will be published in the Hillsboro Star-Journal this week.

Superintendent Gordon Mohn said the amendments will affect expenditures and transfers for food service, professional development and vocational education, but will not result in tax increases.

Mohn told the board the school district's compliance to statutes passed by the 2006 Kansas Legislature will require changes in board member districts. The current boundaries were drawn at the time of consolidation, Mohn said.

Three members-Debbie Geis from District 1, Dale Klassen from District 2 and Mark Rooker from District 3-represent rural constituents.

Three members-Brent Barkman from District 4, Eddie Weber from District 5 and Gary Andrews from District 6-represent city constituents. A seventh member, Rod Koons, was elected at-large.

Board members must live in the districts they represent.

Mohn presented two options based on voter-registration data:

-- Redraw the six-member districts to equalize their population based on the latest census.

-- Have all members elected at-large.

The board asked Mohn to gather census numbers because the second option, which he had recommended for adoption, could result in no rural representation.

Perhaps, board president Barkman said, there's an alternative that would guarantee rural representation.

At Monday's meeting, two retirees were honored with a plaque: Eileen Butler, who has taught for 38 years, and Joan Jost, a bus driver for 30-plus years.

Several board members expressed their thanks to Corey Burton for his years as a teacher and most recently HMS principal.

The board also heard from three high school faculty who reported on goals and progress in improving their areas: Dennis Boldt in business, Creigh Bell in technology and Monica Leihy in family consumer science.

Regarding instructional materials, the board approved the K-12 curriculum consensus maps for social students, purchases that total $48,694.35.

Mohn reported progress regarding the community childcare/early childhood services, which will be called Pre-K Services.

Also, he said an additional in-service day will be needed to train teachers to use MAP, an assessment tool being implemented by the district and statewide by 90 schools.

According to Mohn, summer work projects include remodeling the art room and rest room at HES for Head Start, remodeling the music room for music and art and completing an irrigation system for the HES football field.

The board approved payment of bills totaling nearly $378,300.

Board member Dale Klassen was absent from the meeting.
