Hillsboro library starting new hours

The Hillsboro Public Library has announced new hours: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday; 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Relay For Life set for July 21-22

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Marion County will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. July 21 and 22 at the Marion High School track.

Bennett graduates from KU Med

Eliza Apple Bennett graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine May 21.

Bennett was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and also received the Russell F. Holcomb Award for outstanding performance as a student in obstetrics and gynecology.

In July, Bennett will start a residency training program in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wis.

She is the daughter of Margaret and Harry Bennett of rural Marion.

Library book club to meet Friday

The next meeting of the Hillsboro Public Library Book Club will be at 9 a.m., Friday, June 9, in the council meeting room at city hall.

The group will discussed "Levi's Will" by W. Dale Cramer. Prior to the discussion, Jeanie Bartel will share her family items and experiences.

Copies of the book are still available for checkout.

Richards' students give piano recital

Sixteen students of Beverly Richards were featured in a piano recital May 22 at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, Hillsboro.

Performing were Jessica Elliott, Becky Faber, Harry Faber, Jackson Garrett, Claire Heyen, Elise Heyen, Emma Heyen, Gabe Holmes, Wade Holmes, Jacob Humber, Peyton Loewen, Micha Mashburn, Erin Wiebe, Joshua Wiebe and Molly Wiebe.

Duets were played by Elise and Emma Heyen, Peyton and Shelly Loewen, Erin and Maura Wiebe and Joshua and Ellynne Wiebe.

Parkview plans 'Trading Places' VBS

Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church invites children ages 3 through 13 to travel on a Vacation Bible School journey called "Trading Places: Where Jeses Makes a World of Difference."

The sessions will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. nightly from Sunday, June 11, through Thursday, June 15.

Reading program at Goessel library

Young pet lovers are invited to join "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales" this June and July at the Goessel Public Library.

The summer reading program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, and will include programs, prizes, story hours and more.

Pre-readers are invited to join the program with a parent or other helper who will read to them and help keep their reading chart. Readers through eighth grade can read any books they choose and keep track of the titles.

Prizes will be awarded as reading goals are meet. Books read during June and July will be counted toward their reading goals. A drawing of prizes for all groups will be awarded Aug. 4.

Story times are planned for each Wednesday, June 14 through July 19, for preschoolers through fifth-graders. It will be a 9 a.m. for the preschoolers, at 10 a.m. for kindergartners through second-graders and at 11 a.m. for third- through fifth-graders.

The third- to-fifth-grade sleep-over will be July 19.

Area teens and "tweens"-this spring's sixth-graders through 18-year-olds-are invited to "Get Wild" this summer by participating a program on Fridays, June 17 through July 21.

These kids can plan their activities and choose prizes. The summer schedule will be flexible to accommodate their schedules. Teens and tweens can also participate in the programming and/or reading for prizes.

B-day card shower to celebrate 80th

The family of Esther S. Funk invites friends of all ages to celebrate her 80th birthday with a card shower.

Her children, Peggy and Dennis Voth of Calgary, Canada, Ken Funk of New Orleans, Dwayne and Leona Funk of Clinton, Okla., and Maxine Kirkpatrick of Wichita, will honor her by visiting in June.

Her birthday was May 12. She and her husband, Harry, lived north of Lehigh for 22 years and now reside in Newton.

As children's librarian at the Hillsboro Public Library for 17 years, she conducted preschool Shoryhour and Summer Reading Program for most of those years. She became known as "Grandma Esther" to the children and their mothers.

Other activities she has enjoyed include reading, gardening, canning, cooking and quilting.

Melodrama on tap for June 9

The Hillsboro Summer Drama Camp began this week with 28 first graders through eighth graders participating.

As the culmination their camp experience, students will present "The Saga of Sagebrush Sal," Friday, June 9, at 7 p.m. in the Hillsboro High School Auditorium.

Sagebrush Sal decides to take over the busiest establishment in town, the Bloody Turnip Saloon. Jake the Snake, its owner, doesn't like the idea. He goes after Sal, but Heartbleed Meadow comes to Sal's rescue and saves the day.

The public is invited and admission is free.

The drama camp is tailored to involve students in activities that help develop stage presence, stage direction, observation and improvisation. It also explores various genres of drama, working toward a production involving all camp participants.

Lynn Just and Terry Bebermeyer are directing the camp, which is sponsored by the Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Association, The Kansas Arts Commission and The National Endowments for the Arts.

Cast includes Andreal Bartel, Heather Goldsby, Jerrod Rogers, Dakota Peterson, Justin Houser, Emma Heyen, Elise Heyen, Hayley Pankratz, Amy Bartel, Zach Carey, Clara Loewen, Krista Reimer, Erika Just, Tena Loewen, Rhonda Rogers, Bailey Kaufman, Ashley Bartel, Josh Wiebe, Rachel Schneider, Shian Halstead, Hayley Schraeder, Claire Heyen, Tessa Loewen, Dermot Morey, Madison Klein, Tatum Miller, Tessa Isaac and Rebecca Kaufman.

Farmerettes to meet June 12

The Farmerettes will meet Monday, June 12, at 8:15 a.m. for breakfast on the home of Leona Koslowsky.

The family of Margaret Hein requests a card shower in honor of her 80th birthday June 16.

Trinity Mennonite to mark 40 years

Trinity Mennonite Church will celebrate its 40th anniversary of worship Sunday, June 11, at 211 S. Elm St. in Hillsboro.

The church extends an invitation to the community to come for a fellowship time that begins 9:30 a.m. and worship that follows at 10:30 a.m. A potluck lunch will held after the service.

Special-ed coop to meet June 15

The Marion County Special Education Cooperative Board of Directors will meet for its monthly meeting Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. in the Marion Count;y Special Education Cooperative Conference Room at 302 W. Eighth in Florence.

Note that this meeting is on a different day than its usual third Monday of the month.

Ribbon cutting at Park Homes

The Park Homes dedication and Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Sunday June 11 at 3 p.m.

The facility is located at 200 Willow Road in Hillsboro.

The public is invited to attend. Guests can tour the new facilities and refreshments will be served.

Chat and Dine meets June 3

Marion County Lake residents met Saturday, June 3, for their regular Chat and Dine gathering.

The program focused on creating stained-glass art by Ken Buckbee of Lyons. Buckbee explained in detail the process from design to finished product.

He displayed several items including lampshades, sun catchers, window glass and candle holders.

First-time attendees included Diane and Terry Zager and Karen and Bill Townsley. Kayleigh, Kanna and Jackson Dinsdale were guests of Carol and Don Kirchmer.

Nadine Iseli, Sue Petterson and Carolyn White were recognized for June birthdays.

Diane Zager won the stained-glass lamp.

Hosts for the evening were Joyce and Richard Kellison, Sue and Willis Peterson and Peggi and Jim Wilson.

The next meeting, a cookout at the East Shelter House, will be Saturday, July 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Jackie Klenda wins state FFA award

Jackie Klenda of Lincolnville was named State Diversified Livestock Production-Placement winner and received a $250 check at the FFA convention.

Klenda, a member of the Centre FFA chapter, will advance to compete for national honors.

Those who become national finalists will receive a plaque and a $500 check.

The national winner, selected from this group, will receive an addition $500 check and plaque.

Diversified livestock projection placement uses the best management practices available to efficiently produce and market a combination of two or more livestock-related proficiencies such as beef, dairy, swine, equine, speciality animals, small-animal production or poultry.

The award program is sponsored by Zareba Systems, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
