Pfc. Leland Tyler Krich graduated May 12 from the U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.

He is the son of Leland and Julie Krich and grandson of Dwight and Jane Gooding of Marion and William and Brenda Jones of Topeka.

A 2004 graduate of Hillsboro High School, Krich will begin his specialized training June 6 at the School of Infantry, located at Camp Pendleton, San Diego.

New church opens in Hillsboro store

Cottonwood Valley Independent Baptist Church met for its first services Sunday in the former Hillsboro Carpet Center building at 114 S. Main.

The new church is being led by Plato Shepherd, a church planter originally from North Carolina. He and his wife, Ann, currently live in Lindsborg, where they started the Smoky Valley Independent Baptist Church.

Plato Shepherd, who holds a doctor of theology, was ordained for pastoral ministry in 1974. The Shepherds moved to Kansas in 1993 to further their church-planting efforts.

Services at the Hillsboro site will be each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with more services planned for the future. Shepherd said no Sunday school is offered at present, but a lesson for children is included during the morning services.

The Shepherds plan to move to Hillsboro in the near future.

Marion theater tryouts May 30

Tryouts for the Marion Recreation Commission summer theater program will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 30 at the Marion City Auditorium.

Performance are tentatively planned for the evening of June 24 and the afternoon of June 25.

The program is for children in grades two through eight.

The participation fee is $20 for the first family members and $15 for each additional sibling.

HHS bakers receive honorable mention

Two Hillsboro HIgh School students received honorable mention in the Kansas Wheat Commission Bread Baking Contest.

Alysha Claassen was feted for Hawaiian bread and Tiffany Knaak for peanut butter cinnamon rolls.

Honorable-mention winner receive $25.

The KWC contest drew more than 300 entries and 37 honorable mentions were awarded. HHS had 10 entries.

Card shower requested for Klein

The children of Gladys Klein invite friends and relatives to celebrate her birthday May 24 with a card shower.

The children are Jerry and Joyce Olsen and Ralph and Barb Klein, all of Marion.

Band registrations due by May 31

Registration is now being accepted through May 31 for musicians and bands to perform at Lindsborg's Jam in the Park Sunday June 11.

Area musicians will perform from noon to 8 p.m. in Swensson Park.

Country and pop musicians will play from noon to 5 p.m. with rock, blues and jazz on tap from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Klenda awarded AFA ag scholarship

Jacquelyn Klenda, a senior at Centre High School, has been awarded the seventh annual $3,200 Marion County Agriculture Future of America Scholarship.

The scholarship is provided by Cooperative Grain & Supply, Midlands Farm Services of Marion, Central National Bank and Agriculture Future of America.

Klenda, daughter of Val and Julie Klenda of rural Lincolnville, plans to study agriculture communications and journalism at Kansas State University.

Applicants are required to have a high school grade-point average of at least 3.0, be willing to attend AFA's leadership conference in fall and pursue a four-year degree in agriculture. Each applicant is interviewed and must submit an essay on "Personal Vision for Agriculture."

HHS senior receives state award

Hillsboro High School senior Robert F. Jost was selected to attend the 23rd annual Governor's Scholars Award Program held May 7 in Topeka.

The recognition ceremony honors the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors. Scholars are selected from accredited public and private schools in the state.

"These high school seniors have shown dedication in their studies and a commitment to learning," said Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. "They've earned this honor, and I want to congratulate all of them on this achievement.

"We should also recognize their families, teachers and mentors for helping these outstanding students achieve their academic goals."

This program is coordinated for the governor by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education task Force. It is funded by donations from the Kansas Bankers Association and other private-sector businesses in Kansas.
