The Hillsboro softball team improved to 14-2 with a pair of comfortable wins against Hesston on Friday.
Hillsboro won the opener 9-4, then took the nitecap 12-1 on a one-hitter by pitcher Jenesa Klose.
Both teams battled through wet conditions in order to make up the games that had been rained out April 7.
"The girls played well considering the rain, wet and cold conditions," coach Stephanie Sinclair said.
In Game 1, Hillsboro scored all the runs it would need in the first two innings.
The Trojans scored twice in the first inning when Amanda Bina reached on an error and scored on a single by Jessica Klose. Klose later scored on a throwing error.
Hillsboro bumped the lead to 5-0 in the second. Meghan Jost walked and scored on an error, Bina doubled, Laura Lindsay followed with an infield single and Jessica Klose singled.
The Trojans added two more runs in both the third and the fourth innings to build a commanding 9-2 lead after five.
Lindsay (8-1) struggled a bit on the mound but was never really threatened. The senior struck out five Swathers but also walked three and gave up four hits. Hesston touched Lindsay for its final two runs in the top of the seventh before she shut the door.
Game 2 was decided in the third inning. Carrying a tenuous 1-0 lead going in, the Trojans, helped by three walks and three errors, erupted for six runs on only two hits to boost the margin to 7-0.
That was more than enough for Jessica Klose, who limited the Swathers to a single hit and walked only one batter. Two strikeouts in the sixth and final inning proved to be her only ones of the game.
"As a team, we have tried to give our pitchers the defense to win the games, we have really wanted to give them a shut out," Sinclair said. "That is still a goal to reach. Our errors are coming down also. We are still fairly young, but I expect nothing but the best out of these girls.
At the plate, Bina went 3-for-4 for the game and 5-for-9 for the day and scored five runs to fuel the Trojans. Four of her hits were doubles. Catcher Jessica Klose went 4-for-8 at the plate.
"Amanda is continuing to get some big hits for us," Sinclair said. "Jessica Klose is really starting to pick up the hits for us also."
Haven-A costly error proved to be a game-breaker as Hillsboro lost last Tuesday at Haven, 5-4, and settled for a split of its doubleheader with the Wildcats.
Hillsboro won the opener, 6-1, behind the two-hit pitching of Laura Lindsay.
But in Game 2, the Wildcats (10-4) touched starter Jenesa Klose for six hits and four runs over four innings. Hillsboro led 2-1 after 21⁄2 innings, but Haven scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a one-run lead.
The fourth inning proved to be the turning point. With two runners on and two outs, Haven stroked a ground ball up the middle that passed through the legs of the Trojan outfielder, enabling two Wildcats to cross the plate for a 5-2 lead.
To their credit, the Trojans came back with two runs in the top of the sixth when, with two outs, Klose and Amber King singled, Rachelle Goldsby was safe on a fielder's choice and Amanda Bina singled.
Laura Lindsay shut down the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth, but the Trojans went down in order in the seventh inning to lose for only the second time in 14 outings.
Hillsboro stroked nine hits in the game, led by Bina's 3-for-4 performance, including a double.
Klose surrendered six hits and five walks in losing her first decision of the year against five wins. But only one of Haven's runs was earned, thanks to four errors that contributed to the other four runs.
"We talked between the games about doing the little things right-but that, unfortunately, did not happen," said a disappointed coach Stephanie Sinclair. "We had four errors."
She added: "We are going to take this game and only get better from it. I do know I can count on these girls to come back when they are down."
In the opener, Laura Lindsay (7-1) pitched to only four batters above the minimum 21.
The senior right-hander struck out nine and walked only one. Both Haven runs were aided by errors.
Only six if those hard hits fell in safely-all were singles and by six different batters.
Coming-Hillsboro was scheduled to compete at Halstead on Tuesday. The Trojans will complete the regular season Friday at home with a doubleheader against Sterling.
On Monday, Hillsboro will begin play in the regional tournament in Salina.
Also competing there will be Belleville/Pike Valley, Beloit, Bennington/Tescott, Southeast of Saline and the host school, Sacred Heart.
"Things are shaping up well for us," Sinclair said. "These next two weeks should be exciting."
