The Tabor College tennis teams traveled to Wichita over the weekend to compete in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference meet.

When it was over, the Bluejay women had captured second place while the men placed third-and both teams had qualified for regional action on Saturday.

In the championship match, the Bluejay women were defeated by Bethany College, 7-2.

"Our women gave a great effort in this match, but we just didn't have the firepower to match them on this day," coach Lonnie Isaac said. "We lost to them 0-9 just a couple of weeks back, so we should feel good that we pushed the match a little further this time."

In doubles, Laurel Delamater and Ashlee Helmley defeated Hinman and Everhart 8-6; Danni Brucks and Jennifer Proffitt lost to Prior and Mannebach 4-8; and Erin Wiebe and Erica Hemmert lost to Feyerherm and Kilian 5-8.

In singles, Delamater lost to Everhart 4-6, 5-7; Helmley lost to Hinman 2-6, 1-6; Brucks lost to Prior 2-6, 2-6; Proffitt defeated Morgan 6-4, 6-4; Wiebe lost to Kilian 1-6, 2-6; and Hemmert lost to Feyerherm 5-7, 4-6.

"It was good to see Laurel and Ashlee bounce back and pick up a solid win in doubles," Isaac said. "We'll have the same scenario next week at regionals playing Southwestern in the semis. It won't be easy but if we play well, anything can happen."

Tabor picked up an impressive 5-4 win over Southwestern in semifinals action.

"This was a great win for our women's program," Isaac said. "It is clearly the best team win we have had in a very long time."

The contest didn't begin well. as the Bluejays lost all three doubles matches. Delamater and Helmley lost to Rankin and Crank 1-8; Brucks and Proffitt lost to Stinson and Pettey 6-8; and Wiebe and Hemmert lost to Reynolds and Shahzada 4-8.

Trailing 0-3, the Bluejays made up for their slow start by winning five of six singles matches. Delamater defeated Rankin 6-7, 6-2, 6-2; Helmley defeated Crank 7-5, 0-6, 6-4; Brucks beat Stinson 6-4, 6-4; Proffitt downed Reynolds 7-5, 6-4; Wiebe lost to Pettey 1-6, 1-6; and Hemmert downed Shahzada 6-2, 7-5.

"Laurel and Ashlee both came up big with three-set wins and Erica was able to close it out when the match was tied at 4-4," Isaac said. "With the win, we advanced to the KCAC championship-which is a first for Tabor women's tennis since going to the dual format."

The Tabor men, meanwhile, defeated Bethel in the battle for third place, 4-2.

"We were a very tired bunch after our dual with Friends and just needed four wins to clinch our regional spot and extend our season," Isaac said. "The bottom of our lineup came through and we just pulled our other players at that point."

In doubles, Michael Hagen and Jason Reiswig lost to Pippin and Gudde 4-8; Andrew Braun and Chad Gayer lost to Saner Stucky 0-8; and Shane Miller and Aaron Friesen defeated Reimer and Doerkson 8-0.

In singles, Hagen, Friesen and Reiswig did not finish their matches, but Gayer beat Stucky 6-3, 6-0; Braun downed Doerkson 6-4, 6-1; and Miller beat Reimer 6-0, 6-3.

The men came up short in the semifinals, losing to Friends, 5-4.

"This was a very competitive college dual tennis meet between two very even teams," Isaac said. "It was very disappointing to come out on the short end, but our effort was very good."

In doubles, Hagen and Friesen lost to Rasmuessen and Saska 4-8; Gayer and Braun lost to Reed and Henne 2-8; and Miller and Friesen defeated Lepping and Gassie 8-2.

In singles, Hagen defeated Henne 7-5, 6-4; Friesen lost to Reed 2-6, 2-6; Gayer lost to Rasmuessen 6-1, 4-6, 6-7; Braun defeated Lepping 4-6, 6-0, 6-1; and Miller defeated Nguyen 6-0, 6-4.

Quarterfinals-Both the men's and women's teams advanced to the semifinals last week with easy wins.

The women downed Kansas Wesleyan 9-0 April 24.

In singles, Delamater defeated Cohoon 8-0; Helmley downed Carney 8-2; Brucks defeated Crittenden 8-5; Proffitt beat Parke 8-6; Hemmert defeated Davis 6-1, 6-0; and Wiebe won by default.

In doubles, Delamater and Helmley beat Carney and Crittenden 8-1; Brucks and Proffitt beat Cohoon and Parke 8-3; and Wiebe and Hemmert won by default.

On Tuesday, the Bluejay men defeated Southwestern 5-0.

Hagen and Friesen did not play and Miller and Adrian's matches were stopped before completion because Tabor had secured the team victory.

Gayer beat Kearns 6-1, 6-1 and Braun defeated Hanson 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, Hagen and Reiswig beat Lazano and Wilke 8-4; Braun and Gayer beat Kearns and Hanson 8-2; and Miller and Friesen defeated Seward and Williams 8-1.

"I was pleased with how both our men's and women's teams responded in these matches," Isaac said. "It can be difficult sometimes to get up for a match when you're so heavily favored, but both teams went out and won our first five matches in convincing fashion."

Because of their efforts during the regular season, several Bluejays were named to the All-KCAC squad.

For the men, Hagen was tabbed for the first team while Friesen earned a spot on the second team.

For the women, Delamater was a unanimous selection for the first team and was joined by Helmley.

Earning second-team recognition were Brucks and Proffitt.

Coming-The Bluejays will compete at regionals Friday and Saturday at the Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.

On Friday, the women play Southwestern at 10 a.m. and the men meet Bethany at 1 p.m. The finals to be contested Saturday at 11 a.m.
