The Tabor College men's and women's track teams were less than hospitable hosts at the Tabor College Invitational Wednesday, as both teams kept the team titles in Hillsboro.
The Tabor men scored 145 points to easily defeat runner-up Hutchinson Community College (80) while the Bluejay women scored 100 points to slip past Friends University (88).
The field included 17 men's teams and 14 women's teams.
"You're always happy to win, but there weren't that many teams here with full teams," coach Dave Kroeker said. "That's the reality of it."
On the men's side, the Bluejays enjoyed several first-place finishes.
Chris Baarts blazed his way to the 100-meter title in 11.16. "That wasn't his best time of the season, but he really competed well," Kroeker said. "The 100 is kind of the marquee event. Chris is a guy who's just gotten better and better in the 100 and 200 and he should feel good about that."
Caleb Stanton cruised to the 400-meter gold with a national provisional qualifying time of 48.55 seconds.
"Caleb ran a great race to qualify for nationals with a hand-held time," Kroeker said. "I believe that would convert to a 48.84."
Others winning gold were Doug Pierce in the 110-meter hurdles (15.32) and triple jump (44-10 1/2), Brian Lightner in the 400-meter hurdles (55.93), Zach Remboldt in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:47.29), Matt Rorabaugh in high jump (6-7), Caleb Marsh in pole vault (14-6) and long jump (21-111⁄2) and the 4x400 team of Lightner, Jeff Anenson, Stanton and Mike Beach (3:25.70).
"Matt had a couple of real good attempts at 6-10 again," Kroeker said. "And Caleb had a great attempt at 15 feet in the vault. And Zach, as a freshman, just did a great job."
Place second for the Bluejays were Beach in the 400 (50.70) and Matt Lynam in the 5,000 (17:55.00).
Placing third were Anenson in the 400 (50.79), Trent Voth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.85) and Silas Hibbs in pole vault (14-0).
Placing fourth were Lightner in the 110-meter hurdles (15.95) and Brent Wichert in the discus (147-7).
Placing fifth were Wichert in the hammer throw (146-4) and Brandon Voth in the 5,000 meters (18:50.8).
"Brent Wichert had a huge day in the throws," Kroeker said. "The field was very competitive and his distances were really big for him."
Meanwhile, the Bluejay women turned in a basketful of gold-medal performances, including Heidi Schmidt in the 1,500 meters (5:12.29), Ashley Malcolm in triple jump (36-1) and Dana Champlin in the javelin (118-0).
"That was really good for Dana," Kroeker said. "She's been a little bit up and down but on a day that wasn't real conducive to long throws, I know she was excited about that."
Tabor's relay teams won three golds. The 4x100 team of Ashley Malcolm, Shelby Miller, Tori Truesdale and Jennifer Palmgren finished in 51.02, the 4x400 team of Malcolm, Miller, Rebekah Lockhart and Aftan Lambert finished in 4:10.57, and the 4x800 team of Heidi Schmidt, Lambert, Miller and Ashley Schmidt crossed in 9:58.03.
"I would say (the relay teams) will be a strength for us the rest of the season," Kroeker said.
Finishing second for Tabor was Amber Wiens in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:44.69). Lockhart placed third in the 400 meter (1:03.43).
Placing fourth were Malcolm in high jump (5-0) and long jump (16-73⁄4), Palmgren in the 100 meters (13.44) and Breanna Wray in shot put (40-41⁄2).
Taking fifth were Champlin in high jump (4-10), Sarah Lyons in javelin (109-3) and Bridgette Stevens in the 5,000 meters (20:59.00).
Placing sixth were Lyons in the 100-meter hurdles (16.04), Malcolm in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.77), Estelle Wichert in hammer throw (111-9) and Cindy Wertenberger in javelin (100-0).
Coming-The Bluejays travel to Winfield on Saturday for the Southwestern Invitational.
"At Southwestern, we're going to take it a little easy and not load the kids up so much," Kroeker said.
"We're trying to keep working hard, but we're also trying to be smart and keep their legs underneath them and keep them fresh."
