Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns split a softball doubleheader at Sterling on Friday, losing the opener 6-4 but bouncing back with an 11-10 win in Game 2.
In the opener, Allie Maddox walked to lead off the second inning and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
The Black Bears took a 2-1 lead off starter Sonya Steinborn in the bottom half of the third inning and made it 3-1 in the fifth inning. Sterling scored three more runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.
But the Warriors refused to quit. In the seventh and final inning, Morgan Cady, Steinborn and Frankie Clark opened with consecutive singles and all three runners eventually scored to cut the lead to 6-4.
After the next two hitters were retired, Jandee Sharp walked and Erica Geis singled to put the tying runners aboard. But Sterling induced the final hitter into a ground out to end the game.
Steinborn took the loss but allowed only six hits and one earned run. The Warriors committed three errors.
The Warriors opened Game 2 with a pair of runs in the first inning with Steinborn and Kari Tajchman crossing the plate.
But the Black Bears scored a single run in the first and added four runs in the third to lead 5-2.
After Tajchman singled and scored in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3, Sterling added five runs to lead 10-3 before the Warriors made a dramatic comeback.
Austin Percell singled, Cady and Lanna Carroll hit back-to-back doubles. Walks to Steinborn and Kristin Waner kept the rally going as all five players eventually scored.
A Maddox double and singles by Geis and Percell capped the rally as the Warriors held on for the 11-10 victory.
Steinborn got the win, allowing 14 hits but striking out 13.
The Warriors had seven hits. Tajchman, Geis and Percell led with two apiece.
"We were very excited to win the second game," coach Charlotte Waner said. It marked the first time this season that Marion had won the second game of a doubleheader.
"Hopefully, we have 'the curse,' as the girls were calling it, behind us," she said. "I guess they just decided they wanted to win this game and they just all started hitting the ball really well."
Hesston-The Warriors lost both games of a doubleheader at Hesston on Tuesday, 9-8 and 19-9.
Sonja Steinborn pitched both games for the Warriors.
Game 1 was scoreless before the Warriors scored a single run in the fourth inning. But Hesston answered with a five-run fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
The Warriors matched Hesston with a five-run fifth inning to retake the lead, but the Swathers scored four more runs to take a 9-6 advantage.
The Warriors added single runs in the sixth and seventh but could not come all the way back.
"It was exciting for us to come back from the four-run deficit," coach Charlotte Waner said.
The Warriors managed 10 hits in the loss-including two apiece from Steinborn and Erica Geis.
Steinborn allowed nine hits and struck out three but Marion committed seven errors.
In Game 2, Steinborn allowed 15 hits in the five-inning game.
"I really don't know what's going on," Waner said. "Hopefully we'll get that figured out but we seem to always have more errors in our second game and that gets us into a hole and we just can't see the light."
The game was tied after one inning and the Warriors trailed 5-4 after two innings.
Hesston extended its lead to 9-6 after three innings but salted the game away with a nine-run fourth inning.
Kari Tajchman and Geis both had two base hits as the Warriors pounded out 10 in the contest.
Tajchman had a triple, while Steinborn, Kara Holt and Lanna Carroll all doubled.
"These girls don't give up," Waner said. "You don't want to peak too soon, but you still want to be consistent."
With the losses, the Warriors stand at 3-7 for the season.
Coming-The Warriors are scheduled to travel to Hoisington Tuesday before hosting Wichita Collegiate on Friday.
