Like a cat playing with its wounded prey, the Hillsboro softball team gave Wichita Collegiate early hope of surviving their doubleheader games last Friday in Wichita.
Then the Trojans went for the jugular.
The result was a 30-2 and 20-2 double thrashing of a once powerful program. But both games were close in the early innings.
In Game 1, Collegiate led 1-0 after one complete inning against Trojan ace Laura Lindsay (6-1). But the Trojans, who went down in order in their first at-bat, broke through for 10 runs in the top of the second-on only three hits.
Six walks and two errors by Collegiate helped a lot.
But that outburst was only the tip of a very nasty icebeg. In the third inning, the Trojans doubled their output, pushing across 20 runs during an inning in which 24 Trojans paraded to home plate.
This time, the Trojans knocked out nine hits to go with five walks and three errors. The inning mercifully ended when a Hillsboro runner was called out for leaving third base too soon.
Lindsay allowed two runs on two hits during her three innings of work-only one run was earned. She struck out four Spartans and walked one.
Game 2 was only a minor variation of the first one. This time the Trojans let Collegiate hang around for three innings before pulling away.
With the game still competitive at 4-2, Hillsboro scored four runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth before breaking loose with 10 in the sixth.
In this game, the Trojans needed only seven hits to complement the 18 walks and one hit batter the Spartans contributed. Amber King was a perfect 3-for-3 batting in the 9-hole for Hillsboro, and scored four times.
Starting pitcher Jenesa Klose picked up the easy win to remain undefeated in five decisions. She scattered five hits, walked three batters and struck out six.
After the 31 walks awarded by Collegiate on Friday and 30 in two games against Smoky Valley on Tuesday, coach Stephanie Sinclair admitted the league may not be as competitive this season as it has been in the past.
"Our league seems a little down this year," she said. "Everyone seems to have a good player, or at least a few. We have more than a few when everyone got the bugs worked out.
The sweep raised the Trojans' season record to 11-1, its team batting average to .375 and its scoring average to just over 12 runs per game.
Smoky Valley-Hillsboro "walked" away with a doubleheader sweep of the Vikings last Tuesday. The games, originally scheduled for Lindsborg, were played at the Sports Complex in Hillsboro.
The Trojans celebrated a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Smoky Valley in Game 1 with a 14-2 blowout in Game 2.
In the opener, the Trojans trailed the Vikings, 5-3, going into the bottom of the sixth. Hillsboro then turned a leadoff double by Steph Abbott, a walk to Jessica Klose, a passed ball, an error on a bunt by Laura Skiles and a sacrifice bunt by Lora Andrews into three runs and the 6-5 victory.
Laura Lindsay (5-1) picked up the win, allowing only one earned run while striking out eight Vikings and walking two. Three Trojan errors contributed to the other four runs.
At the plate, Hillsboro managed only four hits but took advantage of 13 walks issued by Smoky Valley. Lindsay and Klose each drew three free passes.
In Game 2, the Trojans followed a scoreless first inning with an eight-run eruption in the second.
Once again, the Trojan offense was fueled by walks. The first seven batters of the inning received a free pass. Smoky then committed an error on a ball hit by Jenesa Klose before Laura Skiles delivered Hillsboro's only base-hit of the game, a two-run double.
A leadoff walk to Becky Steketee led to another Trojan run in the third inning, and then four walks, a hit batter and three Viking errors developed into the final five Hillsboro runs in a hitless fourth inning.
All told, the Trojans received 17 walks in four innings.
Jenesa Klose (4-0) allowed two runs-neither earned-on two hits for a five-inning complete-game victory. She struck out two and walked five. Hillsboro committed four errors in the game.
Coming-The Trojans were schedule to play at Haven on Tuesday. On Friday, they will make up a doubleheader at Hesston that was rained out April 7.
