The Marion golf team had a productive week with meets at Council Grove and Wichita Collegiate.
On Friday, the Warriors were in Wichita, where the four-man team of Travis Hett (77) , Jake Bredemeier (87), Luke Gordon (93) and Keith Jones (88) finished eighth.
Hett's 77 earned him seventh place overall.
"Travis played well and proved he is capable of playing with the big boys," coach Rex Ostmeyer said. "He shot five over par, and those five over came on two holes. So he was real close to being right up there with the leaders."
Ostmeyer said the competition was strong.
"Collegiate has a great tournament with a good golf course and a top-notch field, including some of the better schools in the Wichita area such as Andover, Andover Central and Goddard," Ostmeyer said. "It was definitely a step up in competition for us, which is good.
"Our guys need to learn about that level of competition."
At Council Grove, the Warrior four-man team of Hett, Bredemeier, Gordon and Jones captured second place.
Individually, Hett finished secondwith a 78, Bredemeier was seventh at 83 and Gordon was 13th at 86. Jones shot an 89, Chase Carlson a 92 and Paul Hodson a 108.
"I didn't think we played quite as well today," Ostmeyer said. "The weather was perfect and the course was conducive to some better scores.
"We played OK, but I thought some guys made some poor decisions in a few spots, and I don't think our short games were very good today," he added.
"We threw away a number of shots, but that leaves room for improvement."
Coming-The Warriors return to action Friday when they travel to Salina to participate in the Sacred Heart Invitational.
