The Hillsboro softball team made Lyons pay for its generosity by taking both ends of a doubleheader April 4 at the Sports Complex.

The Trojans combined 10 walks and six errors by Lyons with seven hits for a 16-2 five-inning blowout in the first game.

In Game 2, the Trojans added seven hits to four walks and five errors from Lyons for an 11-3 romp.

In the opener, pitcher Laura Lindsay evened her season record at 1-1 with a five-inning one-hitter. The right-hander walked only one batter and struck five.

Two Trojan errors in the opening inning contributed to the only two runs Lyons scored.

Hillsboro, meanwhile, responded with more runs than it would need in its first at-bat. Lyons starter Kirkhart MaKenzie walked six batters in the opening inning and Trojans Lora Andrews and Amanda Bina contributed run-scoring hits for a six-run burst.

Hillsboro added four runs in the second inning, fueled by consecutive singles from Suzy Lindsay, Steph Abbott and Laura Skiles, then blew the game wide open with five more runs in the third. Bina, batting from the left side for the first time this season, ripped a triple in that inning.

Game 2 wasn't decided until the sixth inning, when Hillsboro broke open a competitive 6-3 game with a five-run burst. Rachelle Goldsby's bases-loaded triple was the game-breaker for HHS.

Jenesa Klose improved her record to 2-0 by scattering nine hits and three walks over seven innings. Lyons scored single runs in the first, third and sixth innings.

Laura Lindsay went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored to pace the Trojans, who improved to 3-1 overall and in the league with the sweep.

"The girls came out eager to score runs and play cleanly in the field," coach Stephanie Sinclair said. "We wanted to improve on getting ahead earlier in the game rather than try to catch up. We were successful in doing this."

Coming-Hillsboro's games with Hesston were postponed Friday because of rain. The Trojans were scheduled to play host to Marion on Tuesday, then will travel to Nickerson on Thursday.
