Marion and Hillsboro golfers fared well at the weather-shortened Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday.
Players from the two schools posted the top two individual scores for the tournament. Marion won the six-man and four-man titles while Hillsboro claimed the two-man crown.
Wet and windy weather prompted the suspension of play after nine holes of what was to be an 18-hole tournament.
Travis Hett of Marion and Justin Kent of Hillsboro led the field with a 39. Hett won the first-place medal in a scorecard playoff.
"The thing I really like about Travis is that he still isn't happy about how he's playing," Marion coach Rex Ostmeyer said. "He's got a great attitude which is perfect for golf-he never gets too high or too low emotionally. He's very calm and gets through mistakes easily and that's why he plays so well."
Hillsboro coach Scott O'Hare said: "Justin is striking the ball really well right now and it was nice to see him at the top of the standings."
Hillsboro's Andrew Bina placed eighth overall with a 42 and Elliott Soyez placed 11th with a 43.
"Andrew came back with a better round (than he had at the Herington tournament), but was still disappointed in his performance," O'Hare said. "Right now he just seems to be struggling taking his practice game to tournament situations.
"Elliot also played below his expectations and abilities, however, the weather conditions were certainly not favorable for shooting low scores."
Hillsboro took the two-man title with a combination of Bina's and Soyez's scores. Joining Kent on Hillsboro's seventh-place four-man team were Darren Enns (50), Zach Magnuson (56) and Daniel Miller (61).
Hillsboro's six-man score of 291 placed the Trojans sixth in the nine-team field.
For Marion, Jake Bredemeier placed 13th individually with a 43 and Keith Jones finished 15th at 44.
Marion won the six-man and four-man competition with scores of 271 and 173, respectively.
Luke Gordon contributed a 47 to the scores of Hett, Bredemeier and Jones in the four man. Chase Carlson scored a 46 and Paul Hodson a 52 to give Marion a two-man score of 98 for sixth place.
"It was definitely not ideal conditions for golf," Ostmeyer said. "When you have cold and wind after you've already got wet makes it very uncomfortable.
"But I'm really pleased with our progress so far," he added. "We have some really good competition on our team even though the guys all really get along well.
"I just hope we can keep improving over the course of the season, keep our confidence up and keep getting better."
Peabody-Burns also competed in the tournament. Jeremy Berger (54) and Justin Williams (52) combined for a two-man score of 104 while Joseph Zappone (63) Brian Wingert (58), Anthony Jones (51) and Jake Watts combined for a four-man score of 228, which placed them 10th. Their six-man score of 334 placed ninth.
Coming-The Hillsboro varsity won't be in action again until April 21, when the team competes at Wichita Collegiate's tournament at Hidden Lakes Golf Course in Wichita.
Marion is idle this week as well, but returns to play next Monday, April 17 when they travel to Council Grove for the Council Grove Invitational.
