Big lift / Some 400 athletes compete in the 3A state powerlifting meet in Marion

The Marion High School gymnasium was a beehive of action Saturday as more than 400 athletes competed in the Class 3A powerlifting meet.
In the boys' division, 27 teams participated. Marion finished 17th and Hillsboro 20th.
In the girls' division, Hillsboro placed third out of 23 teams while Marion placed 10th.
Marion's Casey Nelson finished third in the 172-pound class, lifting a total of 865 pounds. He hoisted 370 in squat, 245 in bench press and 250 in clean.
The other top-six finisher for Marion was Preston Williams, who was fifth in the 220-pound class at 925 (455 squat, 260 bench, 210 clean).
In the 198-pound class, Hillsboro's Michael Suderman took sixth with a total lift of 875. He lifted 375 in squat, 275 in bench and 225 in clean.
Other boys lifting for Marion were Chase Carlson, Adam Regnier, Riley Ross, Elliot Hett, Mark Kukuk, Hank Collett, Calvin Jeffrey Mitchell Leppke, Charlie Holub, John Barr III, Luke Gordon, Brad Klenda, Russell Ploutz, David Deforest, Emmanuel Jackson, Kyle Hett, Brett Billings, Gavin Moore, Austin Hager, Michael Brookens, Jake Czarnowsky, Matt Thierolf, Clay Riggs, Josh Kelsey, Chase Williams, Casey Nickelson, Dusty Britton and Spencer Hunter.
Frankie Martin and Jacob Yoder were the other boys to lift for Hillsboro.
In the girls' division, Hillsboro's Rachelle Goldsby and Marion's Allison Maddox placed sixth in their respective divisions.
Goldsby lifted 500 total pounds, including 245 squat, 120 bench and 135 clean. Maddox lifted 465 total, including 240 squat, 105 bench and 120 clean.
Tiffany Knaak of Hillsboro placed second in the 132-pound division with a total lift of 460 (235 squat, 95 bench and 130 clean) and teammate Audrey Ediger was fourth in the 105-pound division with a total lift of 300 (135 squat, 75 bench and 90 clean).
In the 114-pound division, Marion's Jayde Hess was sixth with a 290 total (135 squat, 80 bench and 75 clean), and teammates Kimber Hardey and Katelin Unruh placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the power class.
Hardey's lifted 530 (285 squat, 120 bench and 125 clean) and Unruh 470 (210 squat, 120 bench and 130 clean).
Also lifting for Hillsboro were Corissa Bartel, Samantha Heinrichs, Laura Neufeld, Amy Neufeld, Julianne Chisholm.
Also lifting for Marion were Kalaya Jackson, Lauren Helmer, Frankie Clark, Lucy Collett and Emalee Versch.
