Trojan girls win in their last at-bat PDF Print E-mail

The Hillsboro High School softball team took advantage of a crucial throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a come-from-behind 5-4 win and a doubleheader split with Hoisington in the season opener for both teams Friday at the Sports Complex.

Hoisington, picked as a preseason favorite to win the Mid-Central Activities Association title, defeated Hillsboro in the first game, 6-2.

Trailing 4-3 in their last at-bat in Game 2, Rachelle Goldsby, hitting in the nine-hole, started the winning rally with a one-out single. Leadoff hitter Amanda Bina followed with a single and Laura Lindsay walked to fill the bases.

Jenesa Klose then stroked a ground ball to the left side. Hoisington's shortstop fired the ball home to force Goldsby, but the throw got past the catcher.

Bina, never hesitating as she rounded third, scored the winning run on a close play at the plate.

"I'm real happy to come out with a win," said Stephanie Sinclair, claiming her first victory as Trojan head coach. "My goal going was to at least split, maybe win two, and just work out any bugs that we had. I think the girls showed that in Game 2."

In a see-saw battle, the Trojans, with sophomore Klose making her first varsity pitching start, fell behind when Hoisington scored single runs in the second and fourth innings.

Hillsboro rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Suzy Lindsay, a walk to Goldsby, a wild pitch and a triple to left by Bina, who then scored on an error in left field on a ball hit by Laura Lindsay.

Hoisington immediately reclaimed the lead with two runs in the sixth inning, setting up the Trojan turnaround.

"That gave us a ton of confidence," Sinclair said of the dramatic finish. "I felt like we could do it because the bottom of our order were the ones getting on base, and we had the bottom of the order up-followed by Amanda, who had been hitting.

"I thought we had a chance. We put the ball in play, (the Cardinals) had to make the play and they didn't make it."

Hillsboro managed five hits and drew four walks against Cardinal starter Brigette Hitschman. Bina, the Trojans' leading hitter last year as a freshman, accounted for three of those hits.

Klose, meanwhile, scattered six hits, walked four and struck out one batter for Hillsboro.

In Game 1, Laura Lindsay allowed only four Cardinal hits for the game, but a combination of three walks and two errors led to three Hoisington runs in the third inning-and that proved to be the difference.

Two more Trojan errors in the sixth inning contributed to a pair of Cardinal runs that pushed Hoisington's lead to 5-2 after Hillsboro had closed the gap to 3-2 with single runs in the fourth and fifth.

"This shook us up a little, but that's something to learn," Sinclair said of the errors. "With so many sophomores in the game, I felt this was a good game to get under our belts."

The Trojans managed only three hits and two walks against Hoisington starter Brittany Vanscyoc, who recorded three strikeouts.

Coming-The Trojans (1-1) were scheduled to host Lyons four a doubleheader on Tuesday, then will travel Hesston on Friday for another twinbill.
