The Marion/Florence-Peabody/Burns Warrior softball team opened the season with a split of its doubleheader with Haven on Friday, winning the opener 4-2 but losing the second contest 11-1.

Pitcher Sonya Steinborn allowed two unearned runs on four hits while striking out seven to earn the win.

"Sonya did a great job in the opener and I was very pleased," coach Charlotte Waner said. "She was a really good leader on the field."

The Warriors scored first in the second inning. Consecutive singles by Lauren Helmer, Morgan Cady and Lanna Carroll loaded the bases for Steinborn, who singled home Helmer and Cady. Kristin Waner followed with a fielder's choice that scored Carroll for a 3-0 Warrior lead.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Carroll led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on fielder's choice on a ground ball hit by Waner.

Haven scored its first run in the fifth inning on a single, stolen base and a single, then cut the lead further at 4-2 in the sixth. But Steinborn shut the door on the Wildcats to give the Warriors their first win of the season.

The Warriors accumulated 11 hits in the game. Steinborn had three while Kari Tajchman, Helmer and Carroll had two each. The Warriors committed only three errors.

The second game was a different story, though.

The Wildcats chased starter Tajchman in the first inning after she allowed seven runs on four hits while facing nine batters. Steinborn came on in relief, but by then Haven held a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats added four runs in the fourth off Steinborn, who allowed seven hits against 25 batters as Haven led 11-0.

The Warriors averted the shutout with a run in the fifth. Allie Maddox doubled, advanced on a Tacy Taylor sacrifice and scored on an error.

But that was all the offense the Warriors could muster in the run-rule game.

The Warriors had only two hits.

"We finished the game strong but we just got into too deep of a hole," Waner said. "We're still trying to figure out what people go where to make our team the best it can be.

"But I thought out offense was a lot better than I thought it would be and our defense was about where I thought we'd be," she said. "We're just hoping to keep improving from week to week and getting better throughout the season."

With the split, the Warriors open the season at 1-1 overall and in MCAA action.

Coming-The Warriors were scheduled to host Nickerson on Tuesday and will travel to Hoisington on Friday.
