Tampa Lions Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner and program March 18 at the Tampa Senior Center.
President Lion Gary Schneider was the master of ceremonies. District Governor Dale Rein, Council Grove, introduced the guest speaker, William "Bill" Wunder of Wichita, past international president.
About 75 guests attended the event, which included a catered meal and a program by Tampa's Leos, which is a Lions organization for young people.
Julie Rziha and Nikke Stenzel, accompanied on the piano by Lori Moldenhauer, sang duets and led group singing. Other Centre High School Leos helped serve the meal.
Thomas E. Duggan was awarded the international president's certificate of appreciation in recognition of the "Passion to Excel" in serving the organization. Duggan has been a member of the Tampa club for 44 years.
Lions members and their guests attended from Marion, Durham, Hillsboro, Hope, Herington, Manhattan, Woodbine, Wilsey, Talmage, Council Grove, Morganville and Wichita.
Tampa members attending the celebration were Paul Backhus, Jim Clemmer, Dee Duggan, Tom Duggan, Lori Moldenhauer, Tom Moldenhauer, Gary Schneider, Carole Spohn and Gary Spohn.
For 50 years, the Tampa club has promoted international, state and district projects as well as completed many projects and extended many courtesies to the Tampa community.
HES carnival set for 5-8 p.m., Friday
This year's Hillsboro Elementary School carnival is planned for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in the 4-H Building at the Marion County Fairgrounds.
Sponsored by the HES Site Council, the event will include new and favorite rides provided by Celebrations of Wichita. Volunteers will run several fun booths.
Concessions will include hamburgers, hot dogs and other goodies.
Bikes will be given away to two HES students as well as several drawings for prizes donated by area businesses and the community, including a KU autographed basketball and USD 410 2006-07 family activity pass. Tickets for the drawings can be purchased at the door.
Proceeds from the carnival will be used for various necessities at HES, including lyceums, special programs, Accelerated Reading tests, classroom supplies and student assistance.
The carnival is the site council's primary fund-raiser for the year. For more information call HES at 947-3981.
KMMC planning two area concerts
The Kansas Mennonite Mennonite Men's Chorus is planning two area concerts in April
The first concert will be at 7 p.m., April 9, at Memorial Hall on the campus of Bethel College, North Newton.
The second concert will be at 7 p.m., April 23, at Presser Hall on the campus of Bethany College, Lindsborg.
Now in its 37th year, KMMC has raised more than $500,000 for the Mennonite Central Committee, an inter-Mennonite agency that sends food to needy people around the world.
Quilt guild plans April 3 meeting
The Country Stitches Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 3, at Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
The guest speaker will be by Janeen Miller, owner of Sunflower Quilts in Derby. She will be presenting a program on wool art.
Guest are welcome. There is a charge for non-guild members to attend.
TFY offering pizza as fund-raiser
Trinity-First Youth will be selling Papa Murphy's pizza as a fund-raiser. Orders must be placed by April 9.
A large cheese, pepperoni or beef pizza can be purchased for $10 and an all-meat pizza for $12.

KFRM-radio owner to speak at Goessel
Kyle Bauer from "The Voice of the Plains" KFRM radio, 550 AM will be speaking in the Goessel High School auditorium at 7:45 p.m., Saturday, April 29.
Goessel FFA welcomes anyone to attend who is interested in learning about how agriculture is changing.
Bauer has lived and worked in and around Clay Center all of his life. He and two other investors bought KFRM in 1996 and developed it into one of the leading agricultural stations in the country.
He is general manager for KCLY and KFRM radio as well as program director and sales manager for KFRM.
Bauer and wife Lisa farm in the area and have other business interests. They have three children: Blake, 24, Paige, 22, and Abby, 16. Lisa Bauer teaches middle school family and consumer sciences.
Bauer graduated from Kansas State University in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics.
Veterans' rep schedules visits
Richard Haywood, Veterans' Service representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs, will be scheduled in Marion Tuesday, April 4 and Tuesday, April 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Marion County Health Department.

Goessel VBS signup to begin March 31
This year's Goessel Community Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 5-9 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church
The theme for the week will be "Trading Places." Through their curriculum study, young people will encounter children from around the world and how Christian faith makes a difference.
Enrollment forms will be available to pick up on March 31 at the Alexanderwohl church or Goessel Mennonite Church.
Completed forms should be dropped off at Alexanderwohl by April 7. For more information, call 620-367-8192.
Tampa group will meet Saturday
The Tampa Community Association will meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Grannie's Little Grill in downtown Tampa.
The agenda for the meeting is to discuss plans for the next several months. Tampa residents are invited to attend.
