Tabor tennis teams earn regional victories PDF Print E-mail

The Tabor College tennis teams had successful week as the spring season moved into full swing.

The Bluejays traveled to Bartlesville, Okla., Thursday to face Oklahoma Wesleyan and John Brown University.

The Tabor women picked up a pair of wins, defeating JBU 8-1 and OWU 7-2.

"This was a good road trip for us," coach Lonnie Isaac said. "Both the men and women had important team victories over Oklahoma Wesleyan, who is in our regional."

In singles play against John Brown, Laurel Delamater defeated Silby Perkins 6-2, 6-1; Ashlee Helmley downed Raynisha Robinson 6-0, 6-1; Danni Brucks defeated Jennifer Trenchard 6-3, 6-2; Jennifer Proffitt beat Molly Keenan 6-2, 6-2; Erin Wiebe lost to Erin Holguin 2-6, 5-7; and Erica Scofield defeated Carrie Seay 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Delamater and Helmley defeated Robinson and Keenan 8-0; Brucks and Proffitt downed Perkins and Trenchard 8-4; and Wiebe and Scofield beat Hoguin and Ediger 8-6.

Against OWU in singles, Delamater beat Amanda Beagle 6-1, 6-2; Helmley lost to Lonna Hunter 7-6, 6-7 (4-10); Brucks lost to Amy Dozier 4-6, 0-6; Proffitt beat Britney Chappell 6-3, 6-2; Wiebe defeated Sarah Coggins 6-2, 2-6 (10-8); and Scofield defeated Brenda Gunter 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Delamater and Helmley downed Beagle and Dozier 8-6; Brucks and Proffitt beat Chappell and Hunter 8-4; and Wiebe and Scofield downed Coggins and Gunter 8-2.

The Bluejay men lost to John Brown 5-4, but defeat Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-4.

In singles against JBU, Michael Hagen lost to Kevin Coleman 0-6, 1-6; Aaron Friesen lost to Van Aswegan 3-6, 3-6; Andrew Reiswig lost to Bobby Rojas 6-2, 6-7 (5-10); Chad Gayer defeated Kyle Carter 6-1, 6-2; and Shane Miller defeated Peter Thurlson 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Hagen and Reiswig defeated Coleman and Van Aswegan 8-4; Braun and Adrian lost to Rojas and Phillips 0-8; and Friesen and Miller downed Thurlson and Carter 8-6.

Facing OWU in singles, Hagen lost to Bruan Seves 2-6, 1-6; Friesen defeated Ben Schmitt 6-1, 6-1; Reiswig downed Ryan Kosmicki 0-6, 6-3, 7-6; Braun lost to Jim Rabuck 5-7, 5-7; Gayer defeated Trey Terrell 6-4, 6-4; and Miller downed Dan Sitton 6-0, 5-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Hagen and Reiswig lost to Seves and Kosmicki 1-8; Braun and Adrian lost to Schmitt and Rabuck 3-8; and Friesen and Miller defeated Terrell and Perdue 8-2.

"With the wins, both teams stand at 2-0 in our region, which is significant as we try to qualify for the regional championships in May," Isaac said. "The bottom third of both our men's and women's teams played the best they have all year.

"If we continue to see that type of improvement from that part of our lineup, both teams will be tough to beat come conference."

The Tabor men's record stands at 3-3 while the Tabor women are 3-1.

Central Christian- The Bluejays took a pair of 9-0 wins from Central Christian last Monday, March 13.

In women's singles play, Delamater defeated Danielle Sides 6-1, 6-4; Helmley downed Kelsey Bjornstad 6-1, 6-3; Brucks defeated Alicia Hill 6-1, 6-4; Proffitt bested Lucia Amezquita 6-3, 6-0; Wiebe defeated Gina BlueEyes 6-1, 6-4; and Scofield won by default.

In doubles, Delamater and Helmley defeated Sides and Bjornstad 8-2; Brucks and Proffitt defeated Hill and Amezquita 8-0; and Scofield and Wiebe won by default.

In men's singles, Hagen defeated Brandon Witt 6-1, 6-3; Friesen downed Kenta Ikeda 6-1, 6-0; Reiswig beat Andrew Stauffer 6-0, 6-0; Braun defeated Grant Classen 6-0, 6-1; Gayer downed Caleb McIrvin 6-0, 6-0; and Miller defeated Shane Kiersey 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Hagen and Reiswig beat Witt-Ikeda 8-3; Braun and Adrian defeated Stauffer and McIrvin 8-2; and Friesen and Miller downed Classen Kiersey 8-2.

Coming-Tabor is off this week for spring break. Both the men and women return to the court at 1 p.m., next Wednesday to host Hutchinson Community College.
