PARTLY NONSENSE- And now for a little domestic emphasis PDF Print E-mail

This is going to be somewhat of a homemaker column this week.

I went to the post office Saturday morning to send out a priority letter and ended up in a long line of patrons, all women, with packages to mail.

My first thought was to leave and come back later, but got interested in the conversation that was taking place.

The hot question was would they rather cook or clean. Some would rather cook and some would rather clean. Surprise.

Having just completed my chores at home that morning and feeling rather proud of myself, I chimed in that I loved to clean. I had washed the kitchen floor and bathroom floor plus cleaned the rest of the bathroom and did the dishes the night before.

Then it sounded like I did it all the time, so to make it more believable I said it was actually eight months since I had done those things. That wasn't exactly true, so I said it had been three weeks.

Here is my first recipe ever. How about this one from Ann Turgeon, who is married to Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon. The recipe appeared in the Eagle's Wichitalk section recently. It is for cottage cheese pancakes and are they ever good. She actually got the recipe from her grandmother Mrs. Carl Fowler. If this is what champions eat, then I want some, too.

This makes the lightest pancake, a cross between an omelet and a pancake:

4 eggs

1 cup creamed small-curd cottage cheese

1/4 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

To make the batter: Separate eggs. Beat whites and keep them in a bowl. In another bowl, beat the cottage cheese, egg yolks, flour and salt. Fold in eggs carefully.

Cook on a greased griddle. The pancakes need to be cooked long enough on the first side so they hold together when flipped. The pancakes will stay fluffy and warm in a 200-degree oven for a short time. The recipe can be doubled. Serve with strawberries and maple syrup.

I never thought it would be neat to use a blow dryer and a fan to dry out the morning paper because it was out lying in the driveway and getting soaked from rain! I'd do it every day if it would rain some more.

Our congratulations go to Becky Carlson, who made the transition from Hillsboro to Iola by winning the Class 4A girls' state basketball championship in her first year at her alma mater.

I've said before that I get plenty annoyed by the sportscasters who think they know everything. So much so that I switched to the radio to hear Max Falkenstein for a KU game.

There was one problem, though. Satellite TV has about a two- or three-second delay for the picture to arrive from way up there, so you hear what happens before you see it happen-which is more annoying. Then I just kill the sound and watch it that way. Who needs an announcer?
