Trojan boys end their season with a loss in sub-state finals PDF Print E-mail

Foul trouble, sub-par shooting and 30 points from Halstead's Justin Regehr undermine Hillsboro's drive for a state berth It was one of those nights when desire and good effort simply weren't enough to produce a victory as Hillsboro lost a physical battle against Halstead, 52-40, in the finals of the Hesston sub-state tournament Saturday.

Hillsboro avoided an early knockout when its top three scorers -- Kyle Kroeker, Lucas Hamm and Wade Weibert -- each were sent to the bench after picking up two fouls in the opening quarter, and were held out of the game the entire second quarter.

When Hillsboro survived their departure by maintaining a 19-17 lead at halftime, the scenario looked good for victory.

But Halstead's Justin Regehr took over the game in the third quarter, scoring 11 points to push Halstead into the lead, 30-26, by the time the quarter ended. He added 10 more points in the fourth period to lead the Dragons to the victory.

Meanwhile, the Trojans struggled to shoot the ball -- both from the floor and the free-throw line -- and both Hamm and Kroeker fouled out by the time the game ended. Troy Frick ended up being Hillsboro's leading scorer with 10 points. Kroeker managed nine and Fadenrecht eight.

Regehr finished with 30 points for the Dragons.

The loss ends Hillsboro's season with a 16-7 record.
