Bluejays drop home opener to Central Christian PDF Print E-mail

The Tabor College baseball team made a dubious home debut Tuesday, falling to Central Christian of McPherson 19-7 in a game shortened because of the 10-run rule.

Coach John Sparks said his team didn't exhibit the qualities it did in the opening weekend that produced four victories.

"Everything we did well over the weekend we did wrong on Tuesday," Sparks said. "It was probably the worst game one of my teams has played in five years."

Tyler McKim (1-1) took the loss for Tabor as the Tigers scored five first-inning runs on one hit.

A 10-run third inning gave Central Christian a 15-0 lead before Tabor broke the shutout in the bottom of the inning.

The Bluejays were paced by Casey Hillman who went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, Casey Cooper (2-for-3, double), J.D. Poplin (1-for-3, two runs batted in) and Brian Kimsey (2-for-4).

Tabor finished with eight hits but also six costly errors.

"It was embarrassing for not only me, but the team as well," Sparks said. "But it was only one game; we'll try to fight our way through and learn something from it."

Tabor's scheduled games on Friday and Saturday were postponed due to cold temperatures.

The Bluejays are scheduled to host Manhattan Christian on Tuesday (Feb. 21), Northwestern College Friday (Feb. 24) and Dakota Wesleyan Saturday (Feb. 25).
