Trojans win SES duals tournament with 4-team sweep PDF Print E-mail

The Hillsboro wrestling team swept all four of its head-to-head matches to claim the team championship at the Southeast of Saline Dual Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament's unique format, where the five participating teams square off against each other in a round-robin series, enabled the Trojans to improve their dual record for the year to 11-0-the best start in program history, according to coach Scott O'Hare.

In the opening round, Hillsboro routed an undermanned St. John's Military team, 78-0. The Muleskinners offered competition in only four of the 14 weight classes.

Winning on the mat for HHS were Chris Jensen at 119, Andrew Bina at 152, Jacob Yoder at 160 and Kurtis Shaw at 275. All four wins came by fall.

In Round 22, Hillsboro outscored Remington 54-22. Picking up mat wins were Nicholas Mueller at 125, Eric Cress at 140, Matt Brown at 145, Bina and Shaw.

The Trojans outscored the Broncos in forfeit points, 24-0.

Losing matches on the mat were Jensen, Tyler Jones at 135, Yoder and John Hein at 189.

In Round 3, the Trojans won six of the seven matches against Marysville to fuel an easy 72-6 win. The Bulldogs were a late entry into the tournament and withheld some athletes because of injuries and point limits on competition.

Once again, Hillsboro's six wins came by fall: Zach Magnuson at 112, Jensen, Cress, Bina, Darcy Unrau at 160 and Yoder at 171.

Shaw was pinned at 275 for the Trojans' only defeat.

Hillsboro picked up 36 points through forfeits.

Those team victories set up a showdown between the two Trojan squads-Hillsboro and the hometown team from Southeast. Both team came in at 3-0 for the day, but Hillsboro won the tournament title with a 51-30 victory.

Hillsboro won six of the 10 matches determined on the mat. Picking up wins were Magnuson, Jensen, Mueller, Ric Johnson at 130 pounds, Cress and Bina. Jensen won by decision while the others came by fall.

Losing matches for HHS were Alex Jost at 103 pounds, Yoder at 160, Unrau at 171 and Hein.

Hillsboro held an 18-6 edge in forfeit points.

"One of the key matches that set the tone for the dual was Zach Magnuson at 112," O'Hare said. "That was a very even match going into the third period. Zach was able to pull it out and pick up a pin late in the match.

"It turned out to be a real exciting match and got everybody pumped up. From that point on, everybody seemed to wrestle with a little more intensity."

O'Hare was pleased with the way his team performed on the mat, especially in the two matches where the opponents fielded a fuller lineup.

"Remington and Southeast were a couple of match I thought would be pretty good duals for us," he said. "We got on a pretty good roll early and wrestled well against both of those two teams to come out with pretty big victories.

Coming-Hillsboro will travel to Lyons on Thursday, where the Trojans will face Haven and the home team in the final league duals of the season.

The league duals title will be on the line when Hillsboro and Lyons face off.

"It's going to be a very tough dual for us," O'Hare said. "We certainly should match up better than the last time we faced them. That's what we've been looking for. It's a good dual to have late in the season to help us prepare for the end of the season."

The Trojans will wrap up the regular season with a tournament at Remington on Saturday.
