Bluejays split pair with Southwestern

Sixth-rated Tabor women win 62-41, Tabor men fall to 14th ranked Moundbuilders 70-57 The sixth-rated Tabor College women picked up their 16th straight win Saturday night with a 62-41 win over the Moundbuilders of Southwestern. Defense was the name of the game for Tabor as the Bluejays limited Southwestern to just 24.5 percent field goal accuracy for the game (12 of 49) and an even more impressive five of 25 (20 percent) for the second half. The Bluejays built a slim 31-27 lead by halftime but totally shut down any offense Southwestern attempted in the final 20 minutes, limiting the visitors to just 14 second half points. Tabor meanwhile, hit 24 of 49 field goal attempts (49 percent) including six of 11 (55 percent) from the 3-point line and added an 89 percent performance from the charity stripe (8 of 9). Emily Vogts led the Bluejays with 14 points and was backed by Erica Hemmert's 10 points. With the win, Tabor remains perfect in the KCAC at 12-0 while improving to 19-3 overall. Southwestern falls to 7-5 and 12-10. The Tabor men played without the services of starting center Chris Metcalf who was ill Saturday night and battled foul troubles in their 70-57 loss to 14th ranked Southwestern College. Tabor trailed 37-23 by halftime but rallied to cut the deficit to 49-46 at the 8:36 mark. It was all Southwestern from there however, as the visitors out scored Tabor 21-11 down the stretch to garner the 13 point win. The teams combined to take 120 field goals in the game and added a total of 73 free throws in the marathon. Brad Gattis led Tabor with 18 points while Jared Reese added 13 and Matt Nelson chipped in 12 as Tabor hit just 35 percent (21-60) from the field including a miserable three of 23 (13 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Tabor added a 12 of 29 performance from the free throw line (41 percent) Southwestern was led by Ricky Kendricks with 19 points as the Moundbuilders hit 22 of 60 field goal attempts (37 percent) but managed to connect on eight of 23 attempts (35 percent) from the 3-point line. Southwestern also struggled from the 15-foot line, converting just 18 of 44 (41 percent) of its free throws. With the loss, Tabor falls to 8-4, two full games behind front running Southwestern and 11-10 overall while the 'Builders improve to 10-2 in KCAC play and 20-2 overall. Tabor returns to action Thursday at McPherson College.
