All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2006 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, to be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Centre High School gymnasium.
Winners of the annual free-throw championship progress through local, district and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarter based on the scores from state-level competitions.
Participants will compete in their own age groups and must submit an entry form with a parent's signature and a copy of their birth certificate.
A parent should accompany each child to the 1 p.m. signup.
Participants can pick up an entry form at the competition or at one of the following locations: Centre Middle School, Hillsboro Middle School or Marion Middle School.

New Year's ball drop, fireworks in Marion
A New Year's Eve ball drop and $1,000 fireworks show is scheduled for midnight at the Marion County Courthouse in Marion.
The annual event is being planned by Dave Hett and Harry Bennett and sponsored by private and business donations.
This year, the ball will drop from the north of the grain elevator owned by Cooperative Grain & Supply instead of the courthouse flag pole, Hett said.
The public is invited to attend.
Hillsboro FFA plans tree pickup Jan. 7
A Christmas-tree pickup is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, in the city of Hillsboro.
Trees need to be on the curbside before that time.
A drop-off area will also be available at the Marion County Fairgrounds from Saturday, Dec. 31, through pick-up day.
The event is one of Hillsboro FFA's annual community service projects. The trees will be transported to Marion Reservoir to be used as fish habitat.

Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church of Hillsboro will hold one worship service at 10 a.m. New Year's Day, preceded by Sunday school at 9 a.m.
The public is invited to attend.
Elk Days at Maxwell offered thru March
Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, located six miles north of Canton, has declared Saturdays during December through March as Elk Days.
Maxwell is home to about 50 head of elk and 200 heads of buffalo. Individuals may make reservations for 11 a.m. tours on Saturdays. Groups of 15 or more may make reservations for any day of the week.
Tours are $8 per adult, $5 for children under 12 and free for children under 4.

Quilt guild to meet Jan 2. at UMC
Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at Hillsboro United Methodist Church.
Charlotte Wolfe, owner of Charlotte's Sew Natural quilt shop in Newton, will be presenting a program on clothing.
There is a small charge for non-guild members to attend.
