Hillsboro boys nail down a solid win while the girls get blown out. The Hillsboro High School basketball teams came home with a split decision regarding their games at Wichita Collegiate on Tuesday (Dec. 13).

In the girls' game, the Trojans suffered through one of the most lopsided losses in recent memory as the state-ranked Spartans simply overwhelmed HHS, 78-30. The outcome was all but decided after one quarter with Colleigiate rolling up a 25-5 lead. By halftime the bulge had grown to 41-9. With the big lead, Collegiate called off its full-court pressure in the third quarter but played starters all the way to the final buzzer.

JuliAnne Chisholm and Hannah Marsh each scored 9 points to lead a muted Trojan attack.

In the boys' game, the Trojans got double-digit scoring from four players and finished with a 72-64 win that wasn't as close down the stretch as the final score would indicate.

Hillsboro trailed, 15-13 after one quarter, then pulled into a 33-27 lead by halftime with a 20-point second quarter. After three quarters, Hillsboro led only by three, but simply pulled away in the final period, leading by as many as 14, 68-54, with 1:51 to play. Collegiate hit a couple of 3-pointers and Hillsboro finally missed some free-throws in the remaining time to narrow the margin of victory.

Leading the pack for Hillsboro was Lucas Hamm with 19 points. Wade Weibert came up big with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, and Kyle Kroeker and Macy Fadenrecht each chipped in 10 points.

With the win, the HHS boys improved to 3-1 while the girls fell to 1-3.
