Slow start leads to loss for MHS girls' team PDF Print E-mail

Cold shooting by the Marion girls' basketball team led to a slow start and ultimately a season-opening loss to Chase County Friday night at Cottonwood Falls, 53-41.

After eight minutes, Marion trailed 18-8; by halftime the deficit had grown to 32-15. Foul trouble contributed to the team's problems. The Warriors committed 22 personal fouls and Megan Hudson and Allie Maddox eventually fouled out.

The Bulldogs stretched their advantage to 45-23 after three quarters before Marion used a 23-8 fourth quarter narrow the deficit to a respectable amount.

Toni Gordon led Marion with 15 points on 5-for-13 shooting, including 2-of-4 from the 3-point line. Maddox added 11 points while leading the team in rebounds with eight.

Marion connected on 14 of 57 (24.6 percent) of its shots, including six of 27 (22.2 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Warriors did make seven of 10 of their free throws while Chase County connected on 15 of 28.

With the loss, Marion will take an 0-1 mark to the Inman Tournament this week.
